Lady Bears stop Albany State

Miles had seven players score in double figures and three finish with double-doubles in a 96-62 win over Albany State Tuesday night at Knox-Windham Gymnasium. The win was the sixth straight for the 21st-ranked Lady Bears (14-2, 12-1 SIAC West), who set a season-high point total in the victory while stopping the Lady Rams' win streak at seven games.

Miles blew the doors open in the first quarter. Trailing 7-2, the Lady Bears scored 17 consecutive points to take the lead for good. Jalyn Shelby (14 points on 6-of-11 shooting) scored seven points during the run, Jaylen Pleasant scored at the 4:30 mark to give Miles its first lead (8-7) and Jamaica Young scored four points during the stretch - the last two coming on free throws to give the Lady Bears a 19-7 advantage with 2:38 left in the quarter.

Albany State (9-4, 8-4 SIAC East) trailed by 12 at the end of the first quarter and was able to cut the deficit to seven points early in the second, but Miles used a 20-7 run at the end of the period to take a 50-30 lead at the break. The Lady Rams trailed by double digits the rest of the way, never getting closer than 12 points. An offensive rebound and putback by Young (12 points, 11 rebounds) pushed the lead to 69-48 with 2:48 left in the third and the lead never fell below 20 points.

A 10-2 run in the fourth quarter put the game even further out of reach. A 3-pointer and layup on back-to-back possessions by Laila Minter (12 points) pushed the lead to 87-57 with 3:25 remaining. The lead got as high as 35 points on a 3-ball by Madison Lee (five points, seven rebounds) later in the final period.

Makayla Rieves (14 points, 10 rebounds, two blocks) and Nayla Wesley (11 points, 10 rebounds) had double-doubles while Samarian Franklin (10 points, nine assists) and Mya Millner (11 points, eight rebounds) nearly joined that list for Miles, which hosts Tuskegee on Saturday. Tip-off is scheduled for 1 p.m.
