Miles used another dominate first quarter to gets its seventh straight win, taking out Tuskegee 81-52 Saturday afternoon at Knox-Windham Gymnasium. The Lady Bears scored 36 points off of 33 Tuskegee turnovers and dominated on the glass (45-31) while not allowing the Golden Tigerettes any second chance points while scoring 16 of its own.
The 21st-ranked Lady Bears (15-2, 13-1 SIAC West) scored 13 consecutive points in the first quarter to take full control of the contest. A steal by
Nayla Wesley led to a fast break layup by
Otiscia Towns (five points, two assists, two steals) to give Miles the lead for good. A 3-pointer by
Jaylen Pleasant was part of the run and two free throws by
Samarian Franklin gave Miles a 15-4 lead with 4:03 left in the first quarter. Tuskegee (9-6, 9-5) went nearly eight minutes without a field goal and when Franklin (14 points, six assists) scored near the end of the period, Miles lead 23-10.
Franklin's bucket was the start of a 10-0 run that went into the second period.
Shannon Niles' 3-ball capped the streak and gave the Lady Bears a 31-10 edge with 4:33 left before halftime. The lead was as large as 26 points in the first half and Miles would go into the break with a 44-19 advantage.
Makayla Rieves had a big afternoon (career-high 21 points on 10-of-13 shooting, eight rebounds) and showcased her efforts in the third quarter with seven points. Five of them came consecutively, finishing at the 5:28 mark to give the Lady Bears their first 30-point advantage - 50-30. A late
Mya Millner bucket sent Miles into the fourth quarter with a 62-31 lead. A
Jalyn Shelby 3-pointer with 6:25 left pushed the lead as high as 34 points in the final period and the Golden Tigerettes never got closer than 26 points.
Tenea Robinson had 17 points and was the only player in double figures for Tuskegee. Millner (10 points, six rebounds, two blocks, two steals), Niles (10 points, three steals), and Shelby (eight points, four rebounds, three steals) were big contributors for Miles, which travels to Spring Hill on Monday. Tip-off is scheduled for 5:30 p.m.
