Lady Bears win eighth straight

MOBILE, Ala. -- No. 21 Miles scored 14 straight points between the third and fourth quarters as part of a spectacular 24-2 burst to break open a close game en route to an 84-76 win over Spring Hill Monday night at the Outlaw Recreation Center.

The game was tied at 50 when the Lady Bears (16-2, 14-1 SIAC West) went on the game-changing run. A Jamaica Young jumper gave Miles the lead with 3:18 left in the third. Makayla Rieves (six points, three rebounds, two blocks) sandwiched an Otiscia Towns bucket with two of her own before Shannon Niles (seven points, three rebounds) scored on a feed from Towns (two points, five assists) right before the horn to give the Lady Bears a 60-50 lead.

Two quick baskets by Samarian Franklin in the first 20 seconds of the fourth quarter continued the run before Spring Hill (6-12, 4-11) broke a four-and-a-half minute scoring drought. That basket did little to deter the Lady Bears, who then scored 10 more points. Young had two more baskets and when Nayla Wesley scored with 6:24 left, Miles had a 74-52 lead - its biggest of the game. The Badgers got as close as seven points in the final minute but it was not enough to stop Miles from winning its eighth straight contest.

Allison Irby had 24 points and Jenice Adjessom had 15 points and 10 assists to lead Spring Hill. Franklin (18 points, six assists, two steals), Young (15 points, three rebounds, three steals), and Wesley (11 points, eight rebounds) were the top scorers for the Lady Bears, who travel to face Clark Atlanta on Thursday. Tip-off is scheduled for 4:30 p.m.
