Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Lady bears blast Kentucky State, earn No. 1 seed

Having already won a share of the SIAC West Division crown, the Miles women's basketball team still had one final goal to accomplish in its final regular season contest Wednesday night.

Using another blistering offensive surge, the Lady Bears (19-6, 16-4) set a season high in points and margin of victory in defeating Kentucky State 86-48 at Knox-Windham Gymnasium. The win was the sixth straight for Miles, which secured the West's No. 1 seed and a bye into the quarterfinals of the SIAC Tournament on Mar. 5.

The group of 10 seniors who were playing their final home contest put on a show in the first half that saw the team shoot over 60 percent from the field, 57 percent on 3-pointers and open a 25-point lead by halftime. KSU (9-17, 8-11) led by eight points in the opening quarter before Miles closed the period on a 14-2 spurt. The run started with two straight 3-pointers from Eunique McKinney and ended with three straight baskets from Makayla Rieves for a 23-19 lead.

During the second quarter, it seemed as if Miles could not miss, scoring its most points in a single quarter this season. The Thorobreds had cut the deficit to two points before the Lady Bears took complete control...and it came quickly. First Iemyiah Harris (eight points, four rebounds, three assists) made a 3-pointer. Then Feliah Greer knocked one down from deep. Madison Lee then joined the fun from downtown before McKinney (nine points, five rebounds, three steals) drilled another 3-ball - all in the matter of 80 seconds. All four field goals came in the matter of 80 seconds and put Miles ahead 37-26 with 6:21 left before halftime.

The points kept coming for the Lady Bears. McKinney's basket started a run where Miles made six of its next eight shots from the field. It was part of a 13-3 run - ended with a Nakedria Turner (four points, three steals_ bucket - to push the lead to 50-29 with 2:25 remaining before the break. In the second quarter, the Lady Bears scored 35 points and shot 71 percent from the field (15-of-21) in the second quarter, leading 58-33 after India Brown's steal and breakaway layup right before the horn.

The lead hit 30 points in the third quarter in a 3-pointer from Lee (six points) and ultimately got as high as 40 points in a late bucket by Asha Shareef in the waning moments of the ball game. In all, Miles shot 50 percent from the floor, made 10 3-pointers, and saw everyone that took a shot from the field (13 players) made at least one bucket.

Diara McBroom (14 points) was the only Kentucky State player in double figures. Tederia Ashley (16 points, eight rebounds), Greer (11 points, nine assists, seven rebounds), and Rieves (10 points, five assists) were the top scorers for the Lady Bears.
