MEMPHIS, Tenn. -- The Miles volleyball team split four matches this weekend at the SIAC Western Cluster hosted by LeMoyne-Owen, dropping contests to Central State and Kentucky State on Friday before earning victories against LeMoyne-Owen and Lane at the Hall-Johnson Gymnasium.
Central State 3, Miles 0 (25-21, 25-17, 25-23)
The Lady Bears hit just .102, committing 20 attack errors, and struggled with the Lady Marauders attack, especially in the final game where they hit .359, in suffering a season sweep to CSU, the second place team in the SIAC West.
Karea Copeland had eight kills, eight digs and three aces and
Addisyn Doss added seven kills and two blocks to pace Miles offensively.
Kayla Trawick had a team-high 17 digs and three assists while
Jaida Lloyd led the Lady Bears with 11 assists and added five digs.
Kentucky State 3, Miles 2 (18-25, 22-25, 16-25, 25-20, 15-13)
Miles led 2-1 behind strong defensive play but the offense stalled over the final two sets as KSU earned the come-from-behind win. Copeland had three kills and a block and
Eliyah McIlwain added two aces as part of an 8-1 run to close the third set that put Miles on top. But the Lady Bears went 14-14-65 (.000) over the final two sets. Still, the Lady Bears led 13-10 in the decisive set before a service error and three attack errors helped the Thorbreds score the final five points of the match.
Copeland (14 kills, 12 digs) and Lloyd (19 assist, 12 digs) had double-doubles, Trawick had a season-high 23 digs,
Zion Rucker and
Precious Sturdivant each had six blocks while
Saraih Taylor (18 assists) and
Kori Brown (10 kills) played big roles for the Lady Bears.
Miles 3, LeMoyne-Owen 0 (25-12, 25-12, 25-14)
The Lady Bears dominated the host Lady Magicians, hitting .344 and committing just six attack errors in the sweep as everyone on the roster got an opportunity to perform. Copeland had 17 kills, 10 digs, three aces and a block to pace Miles while Lloyd had a game-high 18 assists and Trawick added 18 digs, which also led all players.
Miles 3, Lane 2 (14-25, 25-22, 25-20, 28-30, 15-11)
After a rollercoaster fourth set that saw the Lady Bears fight off three set points but fail to convert on two match points before being forced to a fifth set, Miles hit .348 in the final set to avenge an early season loss to the Dragons. Doss, Kiersten Height and Brown had some big swings for the Lady Bears to gain a splt for the weekend.
The Lady Bears are back in action on Tuesday when they host West Alabama. First serve is set for 6 p.m.
