Miles had not lost a match at Knox-Windham Gymnasium heading into Tuesday's battle against West Alabama. But the Lady Bears could not generate enough offense to match the Tigers as they fell in straight sets (25-14, 25-15, 25-22). It gave UWA (9-12) a season sweep of Miles (15-13).
The Lady Bears had trouble stopping UWA outside hitter KB Kinney in the opening set. She had six kills and the Tigers hit .379 as Miles fell behind 13-4 and was unable to recover. In the second set, the Lady Bears made nine errors early in helping the Tigers to a 13-9 lead. Back-to-back kills by
Precious Sturdivant and
Karea Copeland helped cut the deficit to 15-12 but Kinney got three straight finishes as part of a five-point run that swung the momentum in favor of UWA.
The final set went back in forth. Copeland had consecutive kills and
Zion Rucker followed with a big block of Gracie Huver to give the Lady Bears a 13-11 lead. UWA would grab a four-point lead late but Copeland and Rucker would erase the deficit themselves. Two kills by Copeland, followed with one by Rucker then a combo block by the freshman duo knotted the score at 22.
Unfortunately, Miles could not stay the course. An attack error by Copeland, followed by a service ace and kill finished the sweep for West Alabama, which hit .305 for the match and got a team-high 15 kills and 17 assists from Kinney, who hit .400. Copeland (18-6-40, .300) was the top hitter for Miles, which also got good performances from
Addisyn Doss (10 assists, four kills, three blocks, six digs),
Kayla Trawick (13 digs) and
Jaida Lloyd (18 assists).
Miles is back in action on Thursday, when they travel to Mobile, Ala. to face Spring Hill. First serve is set for 6 p.m.
