Golden Bears run past Morehouse

Miles literally ran past Morehouse to sweep a three-game series against Morehouse at Roy W. Johnson, Jr. Field this weekend. The Golden Bears have now won 20 straight games against the Maroon Tigers and have not dropped a contest to the ATLiens since 2018. Miles stole 26 bases in the series with 16 coming in the series-opening win on Saturday. Jordan Pearson led the swiping parade, gaffling 11 bases without being caught. - including two steals of home. Trey Rutledge was one of the hitting stars, with two home runs and seven runs batted in, while Nick Copen closed out the series with a complete-game victory in the series finale.

GAME 1 - Miles 15, Morehouse 13

The series opener was a wild affair that saw Miles open an early eight-run lead but saw it evaporate in one inning. The Golden Bears, though, rebounded to get the come-from-behind win as Austin Douglas came out of the bullpen to provide three innings of shutdown relief to secure the win.

Morehouse led 2-0 early but Miles would score eight times in the second to push out in front. Kolby King had a RBI double and scored on a wild pitch to tie the game. Rutledge would break the deadlock with a two-run double. He added two more RBI in the third when he flew around the bases for an inside-the-park homer that gave Miles a 10-2 lead after three innings. But the Maroon Tigers answered in a big way, plating 11 runs in the fourth inning that turned what looked like a laugher into a 13-10 deficit for the Golden Bears.

But Miles started chipping away in the bottom of the frame. Pearson stole home in the fourth to start the comeback. Camden Matthews knocked in Copen with a single to halve the deficit in the fifth. Then Pearson, as part of a double steal with Mason McClammy, stole home again in the sixth to tie the game at 13. Miles would use the run game to retake the lead. King stole third and would score as the throw ended up in left field for a 14-13 advantage.

The Golden Bears would add an insurance run when Copen's dribbler back to the mound plated Pearson for a two-run advantage. After falling behind, Renay Hunt and Douglas allowed just two hits over the final five innings. Douglas (1-0) tossed the last three, allowing just one hit and striking out five to seal the victory.

GAME 2 - Miles 3, Morehouse 2

A complete opposite from the slugfest in the opener on Saturday, the two teams combined for just seven hits in the nightcap. Morehouse took an early lead as Amir Makle's two-out, two-run single in the second put the Maroon Tigers ahead. Branson Hosea (1-2) allowed three hits in that inning but none in his other four frames, which was just enough to keep the Golden Bears close until the offense could come through.

That would happen in the fourth, when Miles scored all of its runs. King led off with a single against Vincent Latimer and was on second when Morehouse botched a sacrifice bunt from Max Davenport that put runners on first and second. King made it to third on a wild pitch and scored on a RBI groundout by Jackson Lindsey. Pearson would walk, Davenport would steal third and he would score when McClammy beat out a throw on a squeeze bunt for a RBI single to tie the game. One out later, Pearson and McClammy would execute a double steal and Pearson, who had three stolen bases while not recording a hit (two walks and a hit by pitch), scored the go-ahead run on a wild pitch.

Matthews would pitch the final two innings for his first save, striking out three in his two innings as Miles secured the series win.

GAME 3 - Miles 7, Morehouse 2

Miles had just seven hits, but Morehouse issued eight walks and hit five batters to give the Golden Bears plenty enough opportunities to cash in. But the game was tied at 2 in the fifth when Rutledge unloaded for this third home run of the season and second of the series. His 400-plus foot rocket over the scoreboard in left center gave the Golden Bears the lead for good. Auston Brewer and Brandon Leroy added RBI in the seventh and Rutledge added his third RBI in the third with a bases-loaded walk. Pearson - who walked and stole another base - scored on a wild pitch to close out the scoring.

It was more than enough for Copen, who got stronger as the game moved along. At one point, he retired 12 straight hitters and gave up just one hit - a single - after the fourth inning. He allowed just six hits and two runs (one earned), walking none while striking out eight.

UP NEXT - Miles hosts Christian Brothers for a single game on Wednesday. First pitch is set for 1 p.m.
