Golden Bears win fourth straight, take down CBU

Miles used two big innings to take the lead on Wednesday afternoon against Christian Brothers, then held off a late Bucs rally to earn a 12-9 decision at Johnson Field. The win was the fourth straight for the Golden Bears (9-10), who avenged a defeat to CBU (8-11) last week in Memphis.

Max Davenport, who had been slumping in the early portion of the season, had a big day. He used a more consistent hitting approach that he had been working on in recent weeks and found some success at the plate, with two hits - including his second home run of the season - two stolen bases, and four runs batted in.

A career .310 hitter in two previous seasons at Miles, Davenport entered the contest hitting .145. He knew something had to change.

"I've been trying to hit the ball to right center field every time to avoid flying open. A line drive approach can often turn into home runs," Davneport said before the game.

That came to fruition in the fourth inning. The game was tied at four but Miles had already plated two runs to take the lead. But Davenport took Dylan Anders (1-1) deep, smacking a 3-run homer off the scoreboard in left to give the Golden Bears a 9-4 advantage. It was his second long ball of the season and gave the team a much-needed cushion. Trey Rutledge and Nick Copen added RBI in the fifth and the Golden Bears looked primed to blow out the Bucs.

But CBU continued to battle. Drew Shackleford (2-0), who had gotten Miles out of a tough spot in the fifth, ran into some trouble in the seventh and the Bucs added two runs before Mason Kirby could put out the fire. Kirby got into some trouble in the eighth but Dayveon Lavender and Austin Douglas were able to stem the tide. Camden Matthews shut the door in the ninth getting two strikeouts - the last one looking - to notch his second save.

Head coach Milton Barney said his bullpen was just as important today as an offense that is averaging more than nine runs a game during the four-game win streak.

"Along with swinging the bat, we got some good execution today from our bullpen today. Guys came in and pitched well," Barney said.

The Golden Bears are back in action this weekend when they travel to Memphis to play LeMoyne-Owen in a three-game series.
