MEMPHIS -- Miles allowed five unearned runs in the sixth inning against Christian Brothers, turning a tight contest into a tough 12-7 loss Wednesday afternoon at Nadicksbernd Field.
Mason Kirby (0-1) was on the hill for Miles in the sixth in a game tied at 4. After giving up two singles to start the frame, he struck out the next two hitters. It appeared that he would get out of the inning but an error at first base by
Brandon Leroy opened the floodgates. A two-run double, a run-scoring wild pitch, an error at second by
Logan Starnes and a RBI single happened in succession, giving the Bucs a 9-4 lead and chasing Kirby from the game.
Prior to the sixth, Miles was decidedly in the contest. Trailing 2-0 in the second,
Jackson Lindsey singled to left, plating
Max Davenport and
Camden Matthews to tie the game. Starnes hit his first home run of the year - a solo shot - in the fourth to give the Golden Bears the lead. Royal Hobson hit his second home run of the game - a two-run shot - to put CBU back in front in the bottom of the frame but Lindsey came through again in the fifth with a RBI double that scored
Kolby King to tie the game at 4.
The Bucs had opened a 12-4 advantage going into the ninth but Miles did not go away quietly.
Nick Copen hit a pinch-hit home run to lead off the inning, his first of the season, against reliever Dylan Bowers. The Golden Bears took advantage of wildness from Bowers and Banks Caughman, getting five walks and two wild pitches to score again, with a bases-loaded walk netting a RBI for
Brodie Miller that scored
Marques Dunn whileÂ
Tyler Spruill scored on a wild pitch. But it would not be enough to bring Miles back to victory.
The Golden Bears are back home this weekend, hosting Morehouse in a three-game series. The teams will play a doubleheader on Saturday beginning at noon and a single-game on Sunday starting at 1 p.m.
