Golden Bears come up short at UAH

HUNTSVILLE, Ala. -- Miles rapped out eight hits and found itself in the ballgame late but still came up just short in a 6-4 loss to Alabama Huntsville Wednesday afternoon at Charger Park. It was the fourth straight loss for the Golden Bears (1-7), who continue to show well against a tough early-season schedule that has been exclusively against teams from the Gulf South Conference, which perennially fields some of the strongest competition in the region.

After Conner Whitfield allowed a 2-run home run in the first, the Golden Bears got one of the runs back in the second. Kolby King singled with one out to bring home Max Davenport, who reached on an error. Whitfield (0-1) ran into some more trouble in the fourth and saw Miles fall into a 5-1 hole.

Miles, though, bounced right back in the fifth. Auston Brewer led off with a double and he came in on a RBI single by Trey Rutledge. Nick Copen brought home Rutledge with a RBI double and the deficit was cut to 5-3. UAH would get a run back in the seventh but the Golden Bears kept the pressure on. Landon Whitehead and Mason McClammy both singled to put runners on first and third with one out. But McClammy was picked off of first while Whitehead scored to bring Miles within two. That was a big play, as Brewer followed with a triple but was stranded at third.

Reney Hunt, Judson McKinney and Mason Kirby pitched four innings in relief, allowing just one run and each pitcher recorded a strikeout. Brewer and Copen each had two hits and reached base three times for Miles, which opens SIAC play this weekend with the three-game series at Clark Atlanta.
