Miles sweeps CAU to open SIAC play

ATLANTA -- After opening the season with eight straight games against Gulf South Conference teams, Miles opened Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference play with a series sweep of Clark Atlanta at Bill Evans Field. The Golden Bears (4-7, 3-0 SIAC) won the opener, on Friday, 13-5 before grabbing both ends of a doubleheader, 14-7 and 18-7, on Saturday. Miles rapped out 32 hits and had home runs in each of the three games while the pitching staff put up big strikeout numbers (26 in 25 innings) against the Panthers (2-8, 0-3) during the weekend set.

GAME 1 - Miles 13, Clark Atlanta 5

Trent Jones (1-1) struck out seven and allowed just one hit over six innings to earn his first win of the season. Nick Copen went 4-for-5 with two doubles, including one that drove in two runs to open the scoring in the first inning. Max Davenport (2-for-5, three runs) stole home in the second to add to the lead but it was a grand slam by Brandon Leroy in a six-run fourth that broke the game open. Mason McClammy, Auston Brewer and Kaleb Priest all had RBI for the Golden Bears.

GAME 2 - Miles 14, Clark Atlanta 7

The Golden Bears, again, jumped on top early, scoring four times in the first inning. Leroy, Kolby King, Jordan Pearson and Camden Matthews each drove in runs  Copen (1-2), now on the hill, gave back two of those runs in the bottom of the frame but was otherwise solid in earning his first victory, pitching into the seventh inning and allowing five runs (four earned) while striking out five. Miles gave him plenty more run support, adding three in the third and two more in the fourth, including a solo shot from Leroy.

Leroy (2-for-4, 3 RBI) reached base four times and scored three times. McClammy (3-for-4, two doubles), Pearson (3-for-5, 2 RBI, 3R) and Matthews (2-for-4, 2 RBI, 2R) each had multi-hit games while Brewer stole three bases for the Golden Bears.

GAME 3 - Miles 18, Clark Atlanta 7 (7)

Miles fell behind early and was down by four runs after four innings before exploding for 15 runs over the next two frames and winning the contest by the 10-run rule.

Down 7-3 to start the fifth, Isaiah Jordan's two-run single cut the deficit in half. McClammy singled through the left side to drive in a run before Davenport's two-run single to center gave Miles an 8-7 lead. But the Golden Bears doubled-up the five-run fifth with a 10-run sixth. The first six batters reached base, although only Leroy had a hit, a RBI single that scored Kaleb Priest. Two batters later, King hit a grand slam - his first home run of the season - that boosted the Miles advantage to 16-7. Miles would tack on two more - including Leroy's second RBI single of the inning - to close the scoring. Drew Shackleford (1-0), Austin Douglas and Matthews pitched 3 1/3 innings of hitless relief to close out the panthers.

UP NEXT - Miles travels to Albany State for a three-game set on Friday and Saturday.
