Defense dominant in Lady Bears' win over KSU

Miles used its defense to dominate Kentucky State in a 60-38 win over Kentucky State Monday night at Knox-Windham Gymnasium. The Lady Bears held the Thorobreds to under 28 percent shooting from the field, scored 23 points off 25 turnovers, and held KSU to just 13 points after halftime as they allowed the fewest points to an opponent this season.

Using constant pressure on the ball, the Lady Bears took the ball away from Kentucky State at every turn, garnering 16 steals on the night. Down one late in the first quarter, Miles ran off eight straight points to end the first quarter and start the second to open an 16-9 lead. Offensively, the Lady Bears were getting production up and down the roster. Nine different players scored in the opening half and the lead was as large as nine points before going into the break with a 32-25 advantage.

The defensive pressure, though, really turned up in the second half for the Lady Bears. Kentucky State turned the ball over seven times in the third quarter and Miles was able to take advantage. Iemyiah Harris was fouled shooting a 3-pointer - one of three times it happened during the game - and she proceeded to knock down all three freebies to open a 12-point lead. Eunique McKinney followed with a bucket on the next possession to give Miles its biggest lead to that point - 45-31 - with just under two minutes left in the period.

Kentucky State only scored eight points in the third quarter and trailed by 12 entering the fourth. But it got worse from there for the Thorobreds. Miles scored the first nine points of the fourth quarter, capped by a Nuriyah Slaton steal and long pass ahead to Imani Williams for a layup, to push the Lady Bears advantage to 54-33 with 5:48 to go. Even with the final result no longer in doubt, Tomesia Staten and Kelli Finkley drained 3-pointers down the stretch to seal the deal. KSU missed 15-of-17 shots from the floor in the final period as was outscored 15-5 as Miles closed out a dominant win.

Hilane Cantone had 15 points and six rebounds to lead Kentucky State. Harris (17 points, six rebounds, three assists), Tederia Ashley (10 points, seven rebounds) and Feliah Greer (eight points, four rebounds, three steals) led the charge for Miles, which hosts Central State on Wednesday night. Tip-off is scheduled for 5:30 p.m.
