Golden Bears soak in first win

LIVINGSTON, Ala. -- Knowing inclement weather was impending, Miles and West Alabama did everything it could to get in at least one of its contests this week.

The two teams moved up their scheduled doubleheader by one day and made it a single, nine-inning game. That sense of timing transfered to the Golden Bears when they scored three runs in the top of the seventh before the rains became too much to earn their first win, 6-3, over the Tigers Tuesday at Tartt Field.

With the game tied at three in the top of the seventh, Miles (1-3) loaded the bases with no one out. UWA pitcher Austin Kitterman (1-1) would get two outs but he would get pulled in favor of Kirby Osborn. He induced a ground ball out of first baseman William Johnson, but second baseman Conner Christian couldn't handle it, allowing Johnson to reach on the error and scored Jacob Bisharat and Kody Long for a 5-3 lead. Two walks later - the last to Haywood Spencer with the bases loaded - and the Golden Bears had a 3-run advantage.

The game moved to the top of the eighth but the rain became too much. After a small delay, the umpires decided to call the came and Miles headed home with the win. That made a winner out of William Hollis (1-0), who threw two innings of one-hit relief.

Miles jumped right on UWA starter Tanner Elders for two runs in the first. With one out, Destin Davidson doubled and Long walked behind him. Bisharat would follow with a single for his first RBI of the season to put the Golden Bears on top. One out later, Cody Hamilton would drive in another run with a single for a 2-0 lead.

West Alabama would score a run in the second but Miles would get that run back in the fourth on a two-out single by Davidson, which scored Johnson, for a 3-1 advantage. But the Tigers would erase the lead with two runs in the bottom of the sixth before the Golden Bears' heroics in the seventh put them ahead for good.

Miles plays again on Friday when it hosts Paine in a non-conference doubleheader. First pitch is scheduled for 3 p.m.
