Walk in, Walk off

Last-inning drama has been the storyline for the Miles baseball team early in its 2020 campaign. On Saturday evening, the story had a happy ending.

After blowing a one-run lead for the third time in four home games, the Golden Bears were finally able to turn the tables on the opposition. Miles (2-3) staged a two-out rally in the bottom of the 10th to defeat Christian Brothers (0-4), 4-3, at historic Rickwood Field to get its first home win of the season.

Reliever Garrett Dooley (0-1) quickly retired the first two Golden Bears in the bottom of the 10th but hit Jacob Bisharat on the first pitch of his at-bat. Will Cantey followed with his third hit of the game, a single to right, and Bisharat moved over to third. Cody Hamilton was intentionally walked to load the bases, which brought up Roderick Ransom, who entered the game in the seventh inning. With the count even at 1-1, he took three straight balls - the finally one up and in - to earn the walk that scored Bisharat and secure the victory.

Miles went into the ninth inning with a 3-2 lead. Reliever Kolton Easterwood, who had sailed through two innings in relief of starter Matthew McDonald, got the first out in the ninth before he ran into trouble. He gave up a walk and an infield single to put runners on first and second. Miles coach Ty Roberts called in Kody Long to get the last two outs but CBU had other plans.

The Bucs, who stole eight bases during the game, put on a double steal. Ransom, trying to get the trail runner at second short hopped the throw and it skipped into center field. The tying run came in from third but Long (1-0) still had a runner at second and one out. He was able to get a ground out and flyout to end the threat. Miles put runners on first and second with two outs but were unable to push the run across, sending the game to extra innings.

Even with all the late-game excitement, the contest was actually a good pitcher's duel between McDonald and CBU starter Blake Dallas. McDonald had his second strong start of the season, allowing six hits and striking out four in 6 1/3 innings. His only real hiccup came in the fifth inning after Miles had taken a 1-0 lead on a RBI single by Cantey. The Bucs led off the frame with two straight singles, then executed a double steal to move the runners up a base. A single to right by Keagan Voss knocked in a run but when Cantey overran the ball, another runner came in to give CBU a 2-1 advantage.

Other than the run in the fourth, Dallas was rolling through the Miles lineup. He had thrown less than 80 pitches with one out in the eighth before the Golden Bears got a hold of him. Grey Humphries was hit by a pitch before Destin Davidson smoked a triple to deep center that scored Humphies to tie the game. He would come in on a wild pitch to give Miles the lead headed to the ninth.

The two teams are back in action on Sunday, playing a doubleheader at Rickwood Field. First pitch is scheduled for 11 a.m.
