Golden Bears sweep Tougaloo

Miles earned its first doubleheader sweep of the season, besting Tougaloo 8-0 and 4-3 Sunday afternoon at historic Rickwood Field. Andrew Datcher and William Hollis were lights out on the mound while Cody Hamilton and Destin Davidson were the stars at the plate for the Golden Bears (5-7).

GAME 1 - Miles 8, Tougaloo 0

Datcher (1-1) has had one bad inning all season but it wasn't against the Bulldogs (2-8). The junior hurler threw his first career complete-game shutout, allowing just four hits and one walk while striking out nine. He did not allow a runner past second base as he extended his scoreless inning streak to 11.

With the way Datcher was pitching, the offense did not have to do much. But they gave him plenty of help by enjoying its best single-game output of the young season. Hamilton went 3-for-3 with two doubles and a triple. His two-bagger in the fourth inning drove in Ryne Benson and he would score on a Grey Humphries (2-for-3, 2 RBI) groundout to give Miles a 3-0 lead.

The Golden Bears added a run in the fifth, then wiped out any Tougaloo comeback thoughts with a four-run sixth. Bryan Baker and Davidson each had two-run singles to break the game open, making it that much easier for Datcher, who retired the final eight batters of the game.

GAME 2 - Miles 4, Tougaloo 3

Miles had to come from behind to pull out the win in the nightcap. Starter Will Cantey left the game with an injury after walking the first three hitters and throwing a wild pitch. Hollis would come in and stem the tide, holding the Bulldogs to just one additional run. The Golden Bears would get one of those runs back in the bottom of the frame on a two-out RBI single by Hamilton that scored Davidson, who had doubled.

The Bulldogs would get that run back in the second on a sacrifice fly by D'Anthony Morrow but from there, Hollis shut the door. He pitched seven innings, allowing just four hits (only one for extra bases) and one run with three strikeouts. That gave Miles enough time to mount a rally and Davidson would come up big. His infield single in the bottom of the second knocked in Gary McCoy, cutting the deficit to a single run. In the fifth, Miles caught a break. With two outs, Davidson would hit a lazy fly ball to right that should have ended the inning. But Tougaloo right fielder Lanacus Husdon lost the ball in the lights and the ball fell harmlessly in short right field. Davidson would hustle into second for a double, driving in Presston Hope and Gage Humphries for a 4-3 lead.

Tougaloo made one final push in the seventh to tie the game. With two outs, La'Nas Torrey smacked a triple to left field, putting the tying run 90 feet away. But after giving up the last of his three walks, Hollis got Brandon Watson to foul out to third base to end the game.

UP NEXT: Miles has a mid-week trip to take on Auburn Montgomery. First pitch on Wednesday is scheduled for 2 p.m.
