Miles ran its win streak to four games with a doubleheader sweep of Morehouse on Saturday at historic Rickwood Field. The Golden Bears took the opener, 5-2, and the nightcap, 6-1, as they have now won nine straight against the Maroon Tigers (2-4) dating to the 2018 season. Starting pitchers
Andrew Datcher and
Matthew McDonald kept the Morehouse bats silent while
Jacob Bisharat (two hits, two RBI),
Haywood Spencer (three hits, two runs) and
Destin Davidson (two hits, two RBI) were the offensive stars on the afternoon.
GAME 1 - Miles 5, Morehouse 2
Datcher (2-1) continued to pitch well, throwing six strong innings against the Maroon Tigers, allowing just four hits and two runs while striking out seven. He gave up both runs in the first inning, bringing his scoreless inning streak to a halt at 13. But the Golden Bears would provide plenty of offense, scoring runs in each of the first four innings.
Miles would get a sing run back on a RBI ground out in the first from Bisharat, then tied the game in the second on a run-scoring single from Gage Humphies. The Golden Bears would take the lead in the third, getting a bases loaded walk by Grey Humphies and a sacrifice fly from
Kody Long for a 4-2 advantage. A sac fly in the fourth by
Ryne Benson added an insurance run and
Kolton Easterwood would relieve Datcher in the seventh to pick up his first career save.
GAME 2 - Miles 6, Morehouse 1
McDonald (1-1) left his last start early but got right back on the bump and allowed just one run in five innings of work. He gave up six hits, walked two and struck out three to pick up his first victory of the season.
This time, it was Miles that got on the board first as
Cody Hamilton ripped a double in the first inning that scored Bisharat from first. The Golden Bears added two runs in the second, including a RBI single by Davidson, for a 3-0 lead. The Maroon Tigers got one of the runs back in the third but Miles broke the game open in the fourth. Davidson would get an RBI after he reached on an error. Long would single to drive in Spencer and Davidson scored on a RBI double by Bisharat.
Austin Douglas would pitch two scoreless innings in relief of McDonald to close out the sweep.
UP NEXT: Miles hosts West Alabama in a non-conference, single-game tilt on Tuesday. First pitch is scheduled for noon.
