Miles did not have much success with the bats on Saturday, collecting just five hits over two games against Lynn. But one of those hits was more than enough for the Golden Bears (3-7) to salvage a split of the doubleheader, winning the first game 4-3 before dropping the nightcap 17-0 at historic Rickwood Field.
GAME 1 - Miles 4, Lynn 3
Miles entered the bottom of the seventh with only two hits against Lynn starter Misael Castillo (1-1) and only one of those had come after the first inning. But with the game on the line, the Golden Bears matched the hit total and earned the win.
Bryan Baker led off the frame but getting an infield single off of Castillo's glove. Two outs later, he was still standing on first base when first baseman
William Johnson came to the plate. With a 2-0 count, he jumped on a fastball and launched a two-run, walk off home run to left field that set off a wild celebration at home plate. The blast was the team's first long ball of the year, coming at the most opportune time. The home run made a winner of
Zavian Caldwell (1-1), who was strong for the third consecutive start. He pitched a complete game, allowing just five hits and three runs (one earned) with six strikeouts and three walks. Â
Miles grabbed a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first when
Destin Davidson led off with a double to left and was followed by
Roderick Ransom's sacrifice bunt that was thrown past first base, which allowed Davidson to score easily. Lynn would tie the game in the third when Trevor Romeo singled to score Harrison Engstrom.Â
In the fourth, Caldwell got into a little trouble but looked like he had induced a double play ball to get out of the inning unscathed. But the normally solid Davidson threw the ball wide at second base and two runners scored to give Lynn a 3-1 advantage. But Davidson would atone in the bottom of the sixth. After he reached on an error, Ransom would ground out to the pitcher. But Davidson saw no one was standing on third and he rounded the bag at second and made it safe at third without a throw. He would score on a
Ryne Benson groundout, which halved the deficit and set up the dramatic finish.
GAME 2 - Lynn 17, Miles 0
The Golden Bears did not offer much resistance in the second game, getting just an infield single from
Grey Humphries in the second inning. Lynn starter Chris Mormile (1-0) was nearly untouchable in six innings of work, walking just one batter while striking out six. After plating a run against Miles starter
Peyton Godfrey (0-1) in the first and going scoreless in the second, the Knights put up crooked numbers for the rest of the contest as the Golden Bears allowed a single-game season-high in runs and hits.Â
