Miles got off to a good start in its four-game series against Kentucky State, sweeping a doubleheader Saturday at historic Rickwood Field. The Golden Bears won the opener 7-3 and took the nightcap 2-0.
Zavian Caldwell,
Matthew McDonald and
Jacob Schuster did not give up an earned run over the two games wile
Will Cantey went 4-for-4 and reached base five times.
GAME 1 - Miles 7, Kentucky State 3
Miles took a 3-0 lead without the benefit of a hit. Cantey's sacrifice fly got the Golden Bears on the board in the second and a wild pitch and error by the Thorobreds in the third did the damage. But KSU got them all back in the fourth. An error by
Cody Hamilton let two runners score and a bases loaded walk by Caldwell tied the score.
But Miles took the lead for good in the bottom of the fifth.
Dalton Roberts' sacrifice fly scored
Alex Bentley to retake the lead. The Golden Bears broke it open in the sixth. Pinch hitter
Jacob Bisharat was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded to bring in the first run. Pinch runner
Malik Moses would score on a wild pitch before a RBI single by Roberts scored
Roderick Ransom to close out the scoring. McDonald came out of the bullpen to pitch three innings of one-hit ball to earn his first win of the season.
GAME 2 - Miles 2, Kentucky State 0
Schuster was nearly untouchable, allowing just two singles and walking two while striking out eight in a complete-game win. The Golden Bears got all the offense they needed in the third when Bisharat grounded into a double play, scoring Cantey, who went 3-for-3. Miles added another run in the fifth on a bases loaded walk to
Destin Davidson that plated Cantey.
Schuster was dominant to close out the game, retiring the final 13 batters he faced. Only one runner made it to third base an none after the third inning.
UP NEXT - Miles and Kentucky State conclude their series with a doubleheader on Sunday. First pitch is scheduled for noon.
