Miles finished off a four-game sweep of Kentucky State, winning both games of a doubleheader Sunday at historic Rickwood Field. The Golden Bears won the first game 6-5 in nine innings before rolling to a 9-1 win in the nightcap.
Brandon Conner and
Destin Davidson did the damage offensively for Miles (16-16, 8-4 SIAC) while
Andrew Datcher was lights out against the Thorobreds (16-11-1, 6-6) in his start in Game 2.
GAME 1 - Miles 6, Kentucky State 5 (9 innings)
The Golden Bears never led until the final at-bat of the game, erasing deficits on three occasions before putting together the game-winning rally.
Bryan Baker led off the ninth with a walk and moved over to second on a sacrifice bunt by
Alex Bentley.
Dalton Roberts would bounce a single through the middle that scored Baker for the winning run. That would give the win to
Will Cantey, who did not allow a hit and struck out four in 1 2/3 innings of relief.
Tanner Stinnett struck out eight and allowed just three hits in 5 1/3 innings. But he had trouble finding the strike zone, walking eight KSU hitters. But each time he gave up runs, his team got them right back. Miles trailed 3-0 when it came to the plate in the first but Davidson and Conner each had run-scoring hits and Davidson would score on a throwing error as Conner was stealing second to tie the game at 3.
KSU would score on a wild pitch in the third but a sacrifice fly by Davidson would the knot the score at 4 in the bottom of the frame. The Thorobreds would again take the lead in the top of the sixth but Baker would drive in
Ryne Benson with a hit in the bottom for a 5-all tie.
GAME 2 - Miles 9, Kentucky State 1
The Golden Bears would score all the runs they needed in the first inning. Davidson would start the scoring with a two-run single and Conner would add a two-run triple. He would score on a sacrifice fly by
Roderick Ransom for a 5-0 lead.
Conner then continued his assault on Thorobred pitching when he launched a moonshot to left center for a two-run home run - his fifth - to push the Miles advantage to 7-0. He would later add another RBI in the sixth for a 5-RBI day as he leads the Golden Bears in most major offensive categories including runs batted in (36). Datcher (3-0) easily made those offensive contributions stand, twirling five shutout innings and allowing just five hits and two walks while striking out nine. He struck out the side in the third and fourth innings and allowed just one runner to reach third base.
UP NEXT - The Golden Bears will play an exhibition against the Birmingham Barons on Tuesday at Regions Field. First pitch is at 6:30 p.m.
