FRANKFORT, Ky. -- Miles continued its winning ways in the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference with a three-game sweep of Kentucky State. The Golden Bears (23-15, 12-0 SIAC West) won the first two games on Sunday, 10-0 and 15-4, before closing the series with a 9-6 win over the Thorobreds (14-16, 6-5) on Monday.
Jacob Bisharat (eight hits, seven RBI),
Xavius Burden (eight hits, three RBI) and
Lavontae LaCount (two home runs) were the hitting stars while
Dylan Johnson,
William Donahoo and
Christopher Elias each picked up wins on the mound as Miles never trailed the entire series and remained atop the Western Division standings.
GAME 1: Miles 10, Kentucky State 0
Johnson (6-3) ran his scoreless inning streak to 12 1/3 as he and
Lucas Howton combined on the shutout. Johnson gave up just two hits over six innings, striking out four, and not allowing a runner to reach third base. He walked one batter in the sixth, which ended a streak of 22 consecutive innings without a free pass.
Miles tagged KSU starter Joe Crisp (3-6) for all 10 runs during his six-inning stint. Ahead 1-0 in the third, Burden,
Alex Bentley and
Kolby Brannon each knocked in runs as part of a four-run frame.
Trevor Bates, Burden and
Jacob Bisharat would drive in runs in the fourth to push the advantage to 8-0. A two-run double by Bentley in the sixth closed out the scoring.
GAME 2: Miles 15, Kentucky State 4
The offense continued to pound the Thorobreds in Sunday's nightcap, using 15 hits and scoring in each of the first six innings to bludgeon KSU into submission. Brannon had just one hit but it came in the form of a two-run double in the first that staked the Golden Bears to a 3-0 lead.
Miles would add four runs in both the second and third innings. Bisharat would use singles in each inning to drive in three runs while Bates used a run-scoring single in the third and a two-run double in the fourth to match Bisharat's RBI total.
Ryan Bargery added a two-run single in the fourth while Brannon and
Reeves Brashear added run-scoring groundouts in the fifth and sixth innings to round out the scoring.
Donahoo (6-2) struggled through the first three innings, giving up four runs, but the Golden Bears offense made sure that he did not pitch under much pressure as he enjoyed a lot of cushion. He pitched six innings, allowing four hits with two walks and two strikeouts. Taylor Stinnett pitched a scoreless seventh to close out the victory for Miles.
GAME 3: Miles 9, Kentucky State 6
LaCount led the offensive barrage, blasting two home runs and driving in five before the Golden Bears had to hold off a late charge from the Thorobreds.
In the second inning, LaCount got Miles on the board with a three-run shot. Elias would allow a run in the second and KSU had the tying runs on the bases but consecutive strikeouts ended the threat. The Golden Bears would put the Thorobreds in a deeper hole in the third, scoring five times. The final two runs came as LaCount homered again - his third of the season - as Miles opened an 8-1 lead. Bisharat would launch a solo shot in the seventh, his second of the season, and Miles went into the bottom of the eighth holding a 9-2 lead.
But KSU had its most sustained success at the plate in the eighth. Elias, who had allowed six hits and struck out six in his seven innings of work, was replaced by
Andrew Datcher. He allowed four runs - three unearned - including a two-run double by Artie Santomo to cut the Miles lead to 9-6. But
Matthew White got three fly ball outs in the ninth to notch his second save of the season.
UP NEXT: Miles will host Spring Hill for a three-game series in a battle between the only two unbeaten teams in SIAC play. The two teams will play a doubleheader on Saturday that begins at noon, and a single, nine-inning game on Sunday that starts at 1 p.m.
