Roderick Ransom 2018

DH split ends unbeaten conference run

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

Miles and Spring Hill entered Monday's doubleheader as the last two unbeaten teams in Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference play. While the Golden Bears were left as the last team to drop a league contest after downing the Badgers 10-6 in the first game, the nightcap saw them lose their first SIAC game as well in a 25-9 shocker. Lavontae LaCount had four hits and Roderick Ransom drove in five runs to pace the offense while pitcher Dylan Johnson won his league-leading fifth conference game of the season for Miles (24-16, 13-1 SIAC West).

GAME 1: Miles 10, Spring Hill 6

The Golden Bears jumped on the Badgers early, using home runs from Lacount and Ransom to open a big lead before holding on late.

Miles trailed 1-0 when it came to the plate in the first but some wildness from SHC starter Zach Pauline (4-2), who hit the first two batters he faced, allowed the Golden Bears to seize control. A one-out ground out by Jacob Bisharat scored Reeves Brashear and Trevor Bates followed with a RBI double that scored Ryan Bargery as part of a three-run first inning. The Badgers would add a run in the second but Miles would get it right back when LaCount hit his fourth home run of the year - a solo shot to right - to push the advantage back to two runs.

Spring Hill would add another run in the third but a misplay on defense helped Miles blow the game open. With runners on first and second and one out, Kolby Brannon hit a possible double play ground ball to second baseman Brandon Donogue. He hesitated in making a throw to second and by the time he pulled the trigger, everyone was safe and the bases were loaded. Ransom would hit the next pitch out to left for a grand slam - his first career home run - and an 8-3 lead.

Ransom would add a RBI single to left, and scored on a double to right by LaCount to give Miles a 10-2 lead after five. Johnson (7-3) looked like he was rolling to an easy win but Grayson Williams hit a towering three-run homer down the line in left to trim the Badgers deficit to four runs. Two more runners would reach that inning as the senior labored as his pitch count rose. But he got an inning-ending double play to get out of the jam and end his afternoon, allowing 10 hits and four earned runs with six strikeouts. Christopher Elias pitched the final inning to close out the win, giving Miles its first 13-0 start in SIAC play in at least the last 25 years..

GAME 2: Spring Hill 25, Miles 9

The Golden Bears scored the first four runs and the final three runs of the game but in between, it was all Badgers as they scored the most runs against a Miles baseball team since a 28-2 loss to Talladega College in 2011.

Xavius Burden and Brannon had RBI doubles and LaCount added a run-scoring single as Miles led 4-0 after the first inning. Bargery added a RBI single in the second and the Golden Bears had staked starter William Donahoo to a 5-2 lead.  But the wheels fell off in the third.

SHC put the first two batters on in front of Brennan Fontenot, who hit a three-run home run to ltie the game at 5. Donahoo would get two outs but started to struggle finding the strike zone. Three walks and four hits later and the Badgers had a 9-5 lead. Bates would hit his first home run of the year - a solo shot to left center - to briefly stem the tide. But another deluge of runs would wipe out any chance Miles had of making a comeback.

Donahoo (6-3) got one out but gave up two singles and was pulled in favor of Andrew Datcher, who did not allow a hit in the inning. The problem, though, was he walked three batters, hit another, uncorked a wild pitch, then watched as Jacob Bisharat could not handle a ground ball that would have ended the inning. Instead, the Badgers hd scored another seven runs and lead 16-6. Brannon and Justin Bisharat had RBI in the seventh as part of a three-run frame but it was not near enough as SHC left town with a split.

UP NEXT: Miles will host West Alabama in a non-conference tilt on Wednesday. First pitch is set for 1 p.m.
