LIVINGSTON, Ala. -- After collecting just five hits in its previous three-game series against North Alabama, Miles was due to get back on track, offensively, at some point.
That opportunity came Wednesday against West Alabama.
Reeves Brashear drove in four runs,
Jacob Bisharat knocked in three more and the Golden Bears - on the strength of a 10-run seventh inning and 15 total hits - defeated the Tigers 16-8 in a rematch of last season's thrilling NCAA South Region elimination game.
Andrew Datcher (1-0) pitched five innings in relief, allowing just one earned run and striking out five to earn his first career victory as Miles (5-8) snapped a seven-game skid.
Miles trailed 6-4 when it came to bat in the seventh but sent 14 hitters to the plate against three UWA pitchers. Brashear and
Alex Bentley both had two-run hits while
Jacob Bisharat,
Kolby Brannon,
Trevor Bates,
Xavius Burden and Brandon Conner all drove in runs during the frame. The Golden Bears would add single runs in the eighth and ninth but they collected all the insurance runs they needed before the seventh-inning stretch.
UWA (2-8) trailed 4-0 before it came to the plate in the second but tied the game in the third against Miles starter
Matthew White with a three-run double by Jake Hartman. The Tigers would then take a 6-4 lead in the fourth when Joel Murphy hit a two-out, two-run single off Datcher, who relieved White one batter into the frame. But the freshman hurler was solid from there, getting two swinging strikeouts in the fifth before catching two UWA hitters looking in the sixth right before the big offensive outburst in the seventh.
Miles is back in action on Feb. 27 when the Golden Bears start at two-game set at West Florida. First pitch is scheduled for 5 p.m.
