Golden Bears drop Senior Day battle against Benedict

After scoring nine runs in each of the first two days, the Miles offense was unable to get going Saturday afternoon as the Golden Bears fell 12-1 against Benedict on Senior Day at historic Rickwood Field. The game ended after seven innings due to the 10-run rule.

The Golden Bears (20-22, 13-18 SIAC) were only able to muster four hits against Benedict starter Jim Johnson (2-1), who struck out five in the complete game victory. Miles scored its only run on a two-out, run scoring double by senior Zakry Licastro in the sixth inning that scored Myles Wessels, who led off the inning with a walk.

Benedict jumped on senior starter Jayson Wood with three runs in the first, then added three more in the fourth to take control. Wood allowed a solo home run in the top of the fifth and was removed with two outs, trailing 7-0. In the top ofthe seventh, senior Marques Dunn came in but control problems (two walks, four wild pitches) led to three more runs while only getting one more out. Senior Reney Hunt, who was injured but wanted to get one more opportunity to pitch, got the final two outs in a gutsy performance to close out the game.

Despite the loss, Miles finished seventh in the conference standings and will open the SIAC Championships next week against No. 2 seed Albany State in Macon, Ga. on Thursday.
