Lady Bears fall at Benedict

COLUMBIA, S.C. - No. 16 Miles held an 11-point lead in the fourth quarter but missed its final 10 shots from the field in a 66-62 loss at Benedict on Thursday.

The Lady Bears scored the first 16 points of the game. Madison Lee started the run with a 3-pointer and Jamaica Young scored the final seven points of the spurt to conclude the dominant start. Unfortunately, the entire lead was gone before the end of the period as Benedict came back to tie the score at 19 at the end of the quarter. Still, Miles never trailed until the final seconds of the game.

An offensive rebound and putback by Nayla Wesley gave the Lady Bears (17-4, 15-3 SIAC West) a nine-point advantage and she followed by splitting two free throws with 8:36 left fof a 59-49 lead. Two free throws by Shannon Niles with 5:10 remaining saw the lead at 11 points. Benedict (10-7, 10-7) did not make its first field goal in the final period until a missed free throw was tipped in by Asiah Harris with 3:58, but Miles was still ahead 61-53.

The Lady Tigers, though, would score the final eight points of the game. A 3-pointer by Ghylissa Knowles gave Benedict its first lead of the game at 65-62 with 26 seconds remaining. The Lady Bears would miss three 3-point attempts in the final second in falling to Benedict in Columbia for the first time since 2016.

Andrea Duncan had 21 points and Raven Johnson added 12 points to lead Benedict. Lee had a season-high 16 points and eight rebounds, Young had 12 points, and Wesley added eight points and a game-high 12 rebounds for Miles, which plays at Allen on Saturday. Tip-off is scheduled for 1 p.m.
