Softball takes home both SIAC awards

Miles softball swept the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference weekly awards, with Delaney Gray earning Pitcher of the Week honors while Gabriela Garcia was tabbed as the league's Player of the Week.

Gray, a junior from Longview, Texas, pitched two complete-game shutouts this past week, allowing just six hits and no walks while striking out 14 in 12.0 innings of work. In the season-opener against Talladega, she struck out 11 of the 17 batters she faced in five innings of an 8-0 victory. In the nightcap of a doubleheader against Christian Brothers, she allowed just four hits and struck out three in a 7-0 win. She also went 5-for-7 at the plate with four RBI in three games.

Garcia, a graduate student from San Lorenzo, Puerto Rico, had a big week at the plate for the 3-1 Lady Bears. She slashed .500/.538/1.083, going 6-for-12 with four runs, four doubles, a home run, and five RBI. She drove in at least one run in each of Miles' four games. Garcia hit a solo home run for her first hit of the season in the opener against Talladega and followed that with two doubles and two RBI in the nightcap of the doubleheader. She also had two doubles and a RBI in the second game of a doubleheader against Christian Brothers that saw Miles earn its first-ever victory against the Gulf South Conference program.

The Lady Bears are back in action on Tuesday when they travel to face Montevallo. First pitch of the doubleheader is scheduled for 1 p.m.
