Playing in its first game at the renovated Miles Academic Center at Knox-Windham Gymnasium, the Miles volleyball team ran into a formidable West Alabama squad that had already defeated the Lady Bears this season.
Unfortunately, the homecoming for Miles did not cure its ills against the Tigers, who hit .406 in taking a straight-set win over the Lady Bears (25-20, 25-14, 25-20) on Tuesday night. The loss was the first home loss of the season for the Lady Bears (16-6), who stayed close to UWA (19-2) but struggled to find the finishes needed to overtake the visitors.
Two kills by
Kori Brown highlighted a four-point run that tied the opening set at 13. But a kill, five assists and two blocks (one solo) by Rachele Zanini helped the Tigers hit .455 in closing out the first set. Miles led early in the second set but quickly fell behind. Brown (4-4-14) and
Aida Edwards (five kills, .300) had consecutive kills for the Lady Bears to draw within 8-6. But UWA scored eight straight points to put the second set out of reach. The final set was tight and when
Cydney Moore (six digs, four assists) fed
Karea Copeland (nine kills, eight digs, two blocks) for a kill, the score was tied at 16. But West Alabama would score six of the next seven points to take the lead for good.
The Lady Bears are back in action on Wednesday when they host Auburn Montgomery. First serve is scheduled for 6 p.m.
