Playing games on consecutive nights can be tough but Miles found a way to rebound from a tough loss on Tuesday to get back into the win column.
After dropping the opening set, the Lady Bears stormed back to take the match from Auburn Montgomery in four sets (17-25, 26-24, 25-13, 25-22) at the Miles Academic Center at Knox-Windham Gymnasium. The victory gave Miles (17-6) a season sweep of the Warhawks (2-16), who became the first volleyball program from the Gulf South Conference to lose in Fairfield.
Alyzia Cola had 28 assists and 12 digs,
Karea Copeland had 13 kills, seven digs, five aces and two blocks, and
Bailey Jones had a team-high 15 digs to pace the Lady Bears.
The first set was close but Miles - ahead 15-13 - had trouble of serve receive which allowed AUM to score eight straight points and take control of the set. The Warhawks nearly took a commanding 2-0 lead as it served for the set. But a kill by
Jaharia Hunter (nine kills, .222) followed by another kill from Navaeh Bellamy (three kills, three blocks) evened the score at 23. A combo block by Bellamy and Copeland put Miles ahead before a service ace by
Kyla Knox (eight digs, two aces) completed the comeback and knotted the match at ne set a piece.
Mils dominated the third set, hitting well over .400 as a team late into the game before settling at .343 (16-4-35). Copeland,
Aida Edwards (eight kills, four blocks - two solo) and Hunter each had four kills in the set and
Destinee Evans (eight kills, four blocks, three aces) added three more as the Lady Bears put themselves on the precipice of victory. Down 11-5 in the final set, Miles forged at tie at 15 on a kill by Copeland and took the lead for good on consecutive kills by Copeland and Evans. The Lady Bears had match point ahead 24-17 before AUM mounted a late rally. Still, Hunter was able to close it out with a kill that sent the home crowd home happy.
Miles is back in action on Oct. 13 when it travels to face Alabama A&M. First serve is scheduled for 6 p.m.
