JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- The scoreboard from Saturday's contest to Edward Waters did not show a positive result, the young Golden Bears made some week-over-week strides that were evident in the 46-14 defeat.
The offense got into the end zone for the first time this season, first on a 2-yard run by
Roderick Thomas (11 carries, 33 yards) in the second quarter and again in the third quarter on a 13-yard pass from
Kamren Ivory to
Quindavious Swain (three catches, 33 yards). The defense recovered three fumbles - one each by
Carson Pritchett,
Curtis Bryant, and
Dontavious Howard - and
Antonio Reeves blocked a punt that was recovered by
Keshun Marbury.
Unfortunately, the offense still struggled up front, which gave Ivory inadequate time to make a lot of throws. The holes were not opening for the running game and receivers dropped some catchable passes. Defensively, there were missed tackles. Even on special teams, there was a blocked field goal attempt before halftime and the very first punt of the game was kicked into one of the blockers which led to a safety less than two minutes into the contest.
In the end, the loss ended the Golden Bears (0-2, 0-1 SIAC) 10-game win streak against conference opponents and saw the team give up its most points in a two-game span since the final two games of the 2008 season, when they allowed 94 points to Lane and Albany State.
Robert Williams had 10 tackles (five solo) and a sack and Marbury added six tackles (three solo) and a tackle for loss to pace the Golden Bears defense, which will face another tough road contest next week as Miles travels to Alabama State. Kickoff is slated for 4 p.m.
