Miles rolled to a relatively easy straight-set win at home over Rust (25-15, 25-13, 25-11) on Monday night, going to 3-0 on the season at Knox-Windham Gymnasium. It was also the second consecutive win for the Lady Bears (6-6), who played virtually their entire roster against the outmanned Lady Bearcats (0-14).
Rust was competitive in the opening set, playing to within 16-14 after a service error by
Jaida Lloyd (12 assists, five aces). But from there, Miles got a kill from
Kayla Trawick (seven kills, nine digs), then rode her serve to eight consecutive points to take control.
Laylah Sanders (3-1-4, .500) had three kills and
Kiersten Hight (four kills, two blocks) had a kill and a block during the run.
Kandace Griffin had the final two kills for the Lady Bears to end the set, where the team hit .375 (16-4-32).
After altering the starting lineup in the opening game, the Lady Bears went back to their regulars to open the second game. While the Lady Bearcats stayed relatively close, trailing just 10-6, Miles ultimately pulled away. Trawick had three more kills,
Zion Rucker (five kills, .400) added another and
Addisyn Doss had a service ace - one of seven in the set (four of them by Lloyd) - to spark a 6-1 run and put the set out of reach. Rust did not help itself, finishing the game with a minus-hitting percentage for the second straight set (4-5-22) and hitting .000 for the match (15-15-66).
Again, Rust stayed close in the early portion of the final set before Miles scored nine consecutive points to take a 13-4 advantage. Rucker and
Karea Copeland (eight kills, .333) each had two kills and Griffin (three kills, three aces, three digs) added two aces to help run up the score.
Saraih Taylor (21 assists) and
Precious Sturdivant (five kills, .375) also played well for Miles, which is back in action at the SIAC Western Cluster, hosted by Kentucky State, on Friday and Saturday.
