Miles serves Stillman in five sets

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. -- Miles got some big individual performances from its young squad Monday night en route to a thrilling five-set win over Stillman (21-25, 25-16, 25-18, 24-26, 15-13) at Birthright Hall. It was the second straight win for the Lady Bears (3-3) and fourth win in the last five matches against the Tigers (1-7).

Junior setter Saraih Taylor, playing in her first match of the season, allowed the Lady Bears to employ a two-setter plan that played out well. She and freshman Jaida Lloyd (eight digs) each had 21 assists while Taylor added seven digs and four service aces. They both did a great job setting the Lady Bears freshman hitters as Karea Copeland (19-8-51, 14 digs, two blocks), Zion Rucker (10-0-16, .625), Addisyn Doss (10-0-23, .435) and Kori Brown (10-8-38, nine digs, four assists) all enjoyed big offensive nights. Miles hit .216 with a season-high 58 kills against Stillman.

But the Tigers were in the match the whole way. They took the opening set and needed a little extra time in the fourth set to send the match to the fifth-set tiebreaker. There, Stillman jumped out to a three-point lead early and served with a 12-10 advantage before the Lady Bears got aggressive late.

Lloyd set Brown for a kill right before Brown fed Doss for a finish that tied the set at 12. Then, another of the freshman contingent - middle blocker Kiersten Hight - stuffed one at the net to put Miles in front. Hight had four kills and six blocks (three solo) as the Lady Bears had eight blocks on the night. Brown then added a service ace - one of 10 on the night - to set up match point.

Stillman would answer with a kill from Ava Cameron (match-high 20 kills) but Copeland would respond with a big finish off a feed from Lloyd to secure a big road win for the Lady Bears.

Miles is back in action on Tuesday when it hosts Tougaloo. First serve is scheduled for 6 p.m.
