The Miles men's golf team was one of 292 schools across six divisions that earned a PLATFORM Golf Team Academic Award, with the Golden Bears among the 129 earning Presidents Special Recognition.
Â
The Golf Coaches Association of America released their list of honorees on Tuesday.
Â
The Golden Bears were one of just 19 NCAA Division II programs - and the only one from the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference - listed among the Presidents Special Recognition, which honored teams with a 3.5 grade point average or better.
Additionally, two student-athletes -
Jerris Baker and
Samuel Stagno - earned individual Cobalt All-America Scholar honors. To be eligible for Cobalt Golf All-America Scholar nomination, an individual must be a sophomore, junior or senior both academically and athletically in NCAA Division I, II, III, and NAIA, or receiving their associate's degree and in their last year of athletic eligibility in the NJCAA. In addition, they must participate in 50 percent of their team's competitive rounds, have a stroke average under 78.0 in NCAA Division II, and maintain a minimum cumulative career grade-point average of 3.2. A recipient must also be of high moral character and be in good standing at their college or university.
It is the first such honor for Baker and the second consecutive year that Stagno was named to the list. They are the only SIAC selections and two of just three scholar-athletes from HBCUs to make the Division II list.
