Golden Bears sweep way to Minority Prospects title

MONTGOMERY, Ala. -- Miles closed out its 2025 baseball season by sweeping its way through the Minority Prospects Final Four baseball tournament at Riverwalk Stadium. The Golden Bears (27-25-1) won their opening game over Morehouse on Thursday before starting Friday with a win over Tuskegee before knocking off the Maroon Tigers in the championship game. Camden Matthews earned Tournament MVP honors in his final appearance with the Golden Bears.

GAME 1 - MILES 5, MOREHOUSE 0

Jaelyn Rhynes threw a complete-game 1-hitter, allowing just one single in the fourth inning.and only one Maroon Tiger baserunner to reach third base. Rhynes (9-2) struck out six and retired the last 11 batters that he faced. The Golden Bears had just five hits of their own but was able to make them count. Nick Copen had two of them and drove in Balne Bradford both times with a single in the third and another in the fifth after a Bradford double - which was the only extra-base hot of the contest. Copen would score in the fifth on a RBI single by Brandon Leroy.

GAME 2 - MILES 12, TUSKEGEE 5

After allowing a run in the first inning, Miles settled in and got a lot of help from the Golden Tigers. Micah Smith singled to start the bottom of the first, stole second and would score on a balk. Auston Brewer, who reached on a walk, scored on a wild pitch to put the Golden Bears back in front.

The second inning saw much of the same. Smith got a RBI on a bases-loaded walk and Landon Whitehead would follow with his own RBI after being hit by a pitch. Brewer added another RBI after he reached on a error to give the Golden Bears a 5-1 advantage. Tyler Spruill and BoBo Barnes added RBI in the fourth and three more runs scored on wild pitches in the fifth and sixth innings before Whitehead plated Michael Smith on a sacrifice fly.

Jayson Wood (5-4) allowed three earned runs over five innings to pick up the victory. He allowed seven hits - all singles - and struck out six.

GAME 3 - MILES 2, MOREHOUSE 1 (5)

The championship game was shortened to five innings because of rain but the Golden Bears got a big hit from Gavin Millians and strong pitching from Matthews to secure the title. In the third inning, Miles had not had a hit. Jordan Pearson and Jayvionne Williams each wer hit by pitches to start the frame and had moved up a base with two outs before Millians tripled to left to score both runs for a 2-0 lead.

Morehouse got a run back in the fourth without the benefit of a hit. But the Maroon Tigers struggled to hit any of Miles' pitching during the tournament. Matthews (4-0) allowed just one hit - a first inning single to lead off the ball game - and struck out eight in picking up the win.
