ATLANTA -- Miles got strong starting pitching from
Jayson Wood and
Jaelyn Rhynes and
Brandon Leroy blasted two home runs as the Golden Bears earned a series victory over Morehouse (6-3, 4-2 SIAC) this weekend at Gresham Park. In earning wins in the first two games, Miles (9-4-1, 4-1) ran its win streak to six games before falling in the nightcap of Sunday's doubleheader.
GAME 1 - Miles 4, Morehouse 1
Rhynes (4-0) was remarkable, tossing eight shutout frames before surrendering a solo home run to lead off the bottom of the ninth. He was removed after throwing 93 pitches and allowing nine hits, walking one and striking out six. Only one Maroon Tiger made it to third base before the ninth inning homer and defense came through by turning three double plays.
Camden Matthews entered in the ninth to pick up his fifth save.
The offense got to work in the third as Leroy doubled to lead off and one out late, came home on a sacrifice fly from
Kolby King to get on the board. Leroy was at it again in the fifth, hitting a two-run home run - his second of the season - to extend the lead.
Zakry Licastro added some insurance in the top of the ninth when he launched his second home run of the season - a solo shot to left - to give Miles a 4-0 advantage.
Jordan Pearson also had two hits and a stolen base to pace the offense.
GAME 2 - Miles 4, Morehouse 2
The Golden Bears, again, scored the first four runs of the game and Wood - along with Dayveon Lavender and Matthews - made it stand up as Miles secured the series win.
Cameron Warren coaxed a bases loaded walk in the second inning to score
Gavin Millians and King would drive in
Nick Copen, who had singled and stolen second, on a ground out for a 2-0 advantage. Millians was at it again in the third when he hit his first home run of the season - a two-out shot to left - to increase the lead. In the fifth, Pearson singled, stole second, and came around on a safety squeeze by
Casey Threats for a 4-0 lead.
That was enough for Wood (1-0), who tossed six frames of one-run ball, striking out six in the 102-pitch effort. He allowed just one run - a solo home run to lead off the sixth - before ceding to Lavender in the seventh. Matthews tossed the last two innings, allowing two hits and striking out one, for his sixth save in as many opportunities.
GAME 3 - Morehouse 8, Miles 1
Starter
Nick Copen (1-1) cruised through the first three innings before running into trouble in the fourth as Morehouse scored six times to take control of the contest. After allowing just one hit through the first three frames, he gave up three hits - including a two-run home run - and a walk before being lifted for Warren. Unfortunately, that did not stop the bleeding. Two more hits, two walks, a hit by pitch, and an error all contributed to the Maroon Tigers taking a commanding lead.
Miles had six hits in the contest but only one of them crossed the plate as Leroy hit a solo homer in the fifth, his second of the series and third of the season. But it was not enough to bring a halt to the Golden Bears six-game win streak.
UP NEXT - The Golden Bears host a three-game series at historic Rickwood Field against Clark Atlanta with a doubleheader on Friday and a single game on Saturday.
