JACKSON, Tenn. -- A strong spurt at the beginning fo the fourth quarter helped Miles take a 55-49 road decision over Lane on Saturday afternoon at J.F. Lane Gymnasium. The victory gave the Lady Bears (17-6, 13-4) a season sweep of the Lady Dragons (15-9, 10-7) and allowed them to keep their one-game lead over Tuskegee in the SIAC West Division race with two games remaining.
Miles led by as many as eight points in the third quarter but Lane closed the period on a 9-0 run to take a 40-39 lead into the fourth. But the Lady Bears were able to regain their mojo at the start of the final stanza.
Makayla Rieves scored on the first possession to put the team back in front for good. Two buckets from
Feliah Greer helped extend the lead and a layup by Rieves closed a 9-0 blitz over the first five minutes of the closing stanza to put Miles ahead 48-40.
The Lady Dragons would not get closer than six points the rest of the way after missing their first seven shots of the quarter while turning the ball over five times over before finally getting on the board. Miles held Lane to 3-of-15 from the field in the fourth quarter and held Lane to 23 percent shooting for the entire contest.
Taylor Lattimore was the high scorer for Lane with seven points. Rieves (15 points, five rebounds, one blocked shot), Greer (eight points, five assists, three rebounds),
Iemyiah Harris (eight points, four rebounds, three steals), and
Madison Lee (seven points) were the top scorers while
Tederia Ashley (four points, seven rebounds) and
Tawana Nevels (five points, season-high 10 rebounds) were big on the glass for Miles, which hosts Central State on Monday. Tip-off is scheduled for 5:30 p.m.
