Lady Bears set record, win share of SIAC West

Miles was hoping to do something big Monday night, with at least a share of the SIAC West Division crown on the line against Central State. In the process, the Lady Bears made even more history.

With their 77-40 victory, the Lady Bears (18-6, 14-4) have earned at least a tie atop the West Division, remaining one-half game ahead of Tuskegee ahead of Wednesday's regular season finale against Kentucky State. But they did it in stunning fashion, setting a program record for made 3-pointers with 16. The previous mark was 12, set in 2021 against Oakwood and tied earlier this season against Fort Valley State. Six different players made at least one and the Lady Marauders (11-13, 9-9) were drowned by Miles' deluge from downtown.

It didn't take long for the long-distance marathon to get started as Iemyiah Harris made the first shot of the game from deep. CSU answered with a 3-ball of its own but Harris wasted little time, stroking another shot from long range for a 6-3 advantage less than two minutes into the game.

While Harris got the party started, there were plenty of teammates ready to join the festivities. Simone Johnson came off the bench and knocked down the first of ther three triples at the 4:50 mark to put the Lady Bears back on top, 12-10. Laila Minter added one more late in the quarter but it was the Lady Marauders who ended the period with a 16-15 advantage. But Miles had plenty more 3-point firepower at the ready and Central State was about to wither under the assault.

Minter started the second quarter with a 3-pointer and Harris and Johnson followed with consecutive 3-balls to give Miles a 26-20 lead to start the period. Harris continued to find the range, knocking down two more late in the quarter and with 1.8 seconds left before halftime, she was fouled while shooting another trey. She made all three free throws and Miles went into the break with a 35-24 advantage.

Harris did not wait as the second half began, taking and making another shot from deep to open the half. In all, she went 6-of-12 from the field - all 3-pointers - en route to a 21-point performance. Johnson added another before Eunique McKinney joined the fun with her own 3-pointer as Miles ended the third with a layup from Feliah Greer and a 55-33 lead.

While the outcome of the game was no longer in doubt, the 3-point record was in serious jeopardy. Greer (eight points, seven assists) didn't make fans wait long to break the mark as she opened the fourth with the record-breaking 3-pointer. Asha Shareef (six points) made one and Minter added two more - including one on the final shot of the game - as the Lady Bears went 16-for-33 from downtown. Miles would set a mark for largest margin of victory this season and tied the fewest points allowed during the campaign in finishing off Central State.

Jaquel Bronaugh was the leading scorer for Central State with nine points.Minter had a career-high 18 points in 17 minutes, connecting on 4-of-6 3-pointers while Johnson and Tederia Ashley each had nine points for the Lady Bears.
