Lady Bears back in control of West Division

MEMPHIS, Tenn. -- Miles got great results on and off the court Monday night to retake control of the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference West Division race.

The Lady Bears annihilated LeMoyne-Owen 79-45 at Hall/Johnson Gymnasium, the 34-point margin the largest against a Division II opponent this season. Matched with a Tuskegee loss at Central State, Miles (16-6, 12-4) is now in sole possession of first place in the West by a game and can assure at least a tie for a second straight division title with a combination of two wins and/or Tuskegee losses over the final three games. The magic number is still three for the team to secure the division's No. 1 seed for next month's SIAC Tournament.

It took half of the first quarter for Miles to get it in gear against the Lady Magicians (7-19, 3-14). Eunique McKinney (eight points) gave the Lady Bears the lead for good with a jumper at the 4:44 mark in the opening frame, which ended on a 10-2 run that gave the team a 12-8 advantage headed into the second quarter. To start the second quarter, Makayla Rieves scored six points in the first three minutes, Iemyiah Harris and Madison Lee (four points) both drained 3-pointers and Tederia Ashley capped a 14-1 run over the first four minutes to push the advantage to 26-9. Ashley and Rieves had their way inside as the lead swelled to 35-13 at the half.

LeMoyne-Owen got to within 12 points on a couple of occasions in the third quarter but never really threatened the Lady Bears in the second half. Miles was scoring almost at will over the final three quarters, shooting nearly 54 percent from the field over that span. In the fourth quarter, the team went 7-of-11 from the floor, 4-of-5 from 3-point land as Harris, Feliah Greer, McKinney and Simone Johnson (three points, two rebounds, two steals) all rained shots from deep.

Kennedy Fuller had 17 points and Keria McGhee added 12 to lead the Lady Magicians. Greer (14 points, nine rebounds, four assists, two steals), Rieves (11 points, four rebounds, two blocks), Harris (10 points, seven assists, three rebounds, two steals) and Ashley (11 points, five rebounds, two steals) all scored in double figures for Miles, which travels to play Lane on Saturday. Tip-off is scheduled for 1 p.m.
