TUSKEGEE, Ala. -- Facing match point and the prospect of blowing a 2-0 lead, Miles found a way to block out Tuskegee while earning a spot in the SIAC Tournament.
The Lady Bears, down 14-12 in the fifth set, scored five of the final six points of the match to defeat the Golden Tigerettes on Friday night at Chappie James Arena (25-22, 25-14, 21-25, 11-25, 17-15). The win gave Miles (18-15, 8-11 SIAC West) the season sweep of Tuskegee (14-12, 7-11) and earn a return to the conference tournament after a one-year hiatus. Leaning on a squad that featured just two upperclassman, head coach
Reaucheandra Matthews Scott lead her team to a 13-game improvement in the standings in her second year as the team closed out the regular season.
The wild ending showcased the young talent that has driven the Lady Bears all season. After taking the first two sets, Miles was unable to grab the next two sets as the two rivals battled for a chance to clinch one of two remaining tournament bids with Kentucky State lurking close behind. But when Sian Sprinkle scored for the Golden Tigerettes, they led 14-12 and looked poised to complete the big comeback.
That is when the young Lady Bears began to grind. Junior
Precious Sturdivant - in her first year at Miles - continued her strong play of late in the middle. Her combo block with
Addisyn Doss (five kills, thee blocks) staved off match point for Tuskegee. Freshman
Karea Copeland - arguably the top hitter this season in the SIAC - took a feed from freshman setter
Jaida Lloyd (32 assists, three kills) to score and tie the game at 14.
Junior
Kayla Trawick (18 digs, four assists), who has played all over for the Lady Bears this season, followed with her 45th service ace of the season to give Miles its first match point opportunity. But Demya Tate scored for Tuskegee to tie the game at 15.
From there, though, Miles got it done. Copeland got her 23rd kill of the match to put the Lady Bears back on top. This was the sixth time that she topped 20 kills in a match - the third time that she had exactly 23 - and added 10 digs for her 16th double-double. She then combined with Sturdivant (six blocks, two solo) to block Tate at the net to secure the victory.
Kori Brown had 10 kills and
Eliyah McIlwain added 13 digs for Miles, which awaits its opponent for the SIAC Tournament that begins on Nov. 20 in Mobile, Ala.
