Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Lady Bears clobber Central State

Miles used a big second quarter and a balanced effort throughout the roster to earn a 76-61 win over Central State Tuesday afternoon at Knox-Windham Gymnasium. The win kept the Lady Bears (4-1, 3-0 SIAC) perfect at home this season and ran their win streak over the Lady Marauders (1-3, 0-3) to seven games.

CSU started slow but held a 16-13 lead at the end of the opening quarter. But Miles blew the game open in the latter half of the second period. Three minutes into the quarter, the Lady Marauders held a one-point advantage but when Madison Lee (six points, two steals) scored with 6:45 left before halftime, the Lady Bears had taken the lead for good. From that point, Central State went 1-of-7 from the field and turned the ball over 11 times. Miles closed the half on a 15-1 run. Jamaica Young (team-highs with 12 points and eight rebounds) had six points down the stretch and Keyarria Stokes' (nine points, four rebounds) putback at the horn gave the Lady Bears a 42-23 lead at the break.

Samarian Franklin (five points, five assists) hit a 3-pointer to start the second half to push the lead beyond 20 points and a bucket by Shannon Niles (11 points) in the fourth quarter saw the Lady Bears lead get to 27 points (70-43) with less than seven minutes left in the contest. CSU scored the final nine points of the game but that did little to impact the end result as Miles scored 35 points off of 33 Central State turnovers to control the contest.

Ma'Kayla Williams (18 points) and DeZarae Stewart (10 points) were the top performers for Central State. Nayla Wesley (11 points, eight rebounds, four assists, three steals, two blocks) and Mya Millner (11 points, seven rebounds, four assists, three steals, two blocks) also scored in double figures for Miles, which travels to play LeMoyne-Owen on Saturday. Tip-off is scheduled for 1 p.m.
