ROME, Ga. -- The Miles volleyball team struggled against Shorter, dropping a match in straight sets (25-9, 25-14, 25-10) Tuesday night at the Winthrop-King Centre. It was a step-up in competition for the Lady Bears (0-2) in this young season and the team - virtually brand new from a year ago - continued to work through some early growing pains.
On a night where there were more attack errors (23) than kills (10), freshman middle hitter
Zion Williams stood out. She led the team in kills and hitting percentage (4-1-9, .333). But the Lady Bears had very little success attacking from the outside and the errors led to a -.169 team hitting percentage. Miles never led in the three sets and could not stop the attack of the Hawks, who controlled both sides of the net (38 kills, .349 hitting percentage, six blocks).
Among the top for performers for the Lady Bears were
Khloe Johnson (two kills),
Tracey Thomas (seven digs, two assists), and
Saraih Taylor (three assist, three digs). Miles is next in action on Monday when it travels to play Oakwood. First serve is scheduled for 6 p.m.
