Lady Bears sweep Kentucky State

FRANKFORT, Ky. -- Needing a sweep against Kentucky State to get back into the SIAC softball tournament conversation, Miles did just that this weekend. The Lady Bears took all three games - 10-1 on Friday and then 6-5 and 4-2 on Saturday. Desalynn Nesbitt had a win and a save to open the series, Abigail Boudreaux was solid at the plate and in the circle, and Michelle Tanks and Jada McCalebb were the offensive stars for the Lady Bears (8-10, 5-11 SIAC), who ended an 11-game losing streak.

GAME 1 - Miles 10, Kentucky State 1 (6)

Miles jumped on KSU early and got a dominant performance in the circle from Nesbitt (complete-game, three hits, 3 BB, 7 K) in earning a run-rule win. Kiara Cobb stole home and McCalebb (2-for-3, three runs) scored on a RBI groundout by Genia Davis to open the scoring in the first. A two-run single by Boudreaux and a run-scoring knock by Mikaylah Williams in the third doubled the Lady Bears advantage to 6-0.

Meanwhile, Nesbitt was rolling. She had five strikeouts through the first three innings and did not allow a base hit until the fourth. Offensively, she also went 3-for-4 at the plate. But the Thorobreds could hardly get anything going while the Lady Bears were still tacking on. In the sixth, Tanks (3-for-4, two doubles) drove in a run with a double and Boudreax added another RBI in the three-run frame for a 10-0 advantage. KSU pushed one across in the bottom of the inning but it was not enough to keep Miles from ending the game early.

GAME 2 - Miles 6, Kentucky State 5

Miles opened a big lead but had to hold off a late surge from the Thorobreds. Cobb and McCalebb each had RBI singles in the second to get Miles on the board but KSU added single runs in the second and third to tie the game. The Lady Bears took over with a three-run fifth. A RBI single by Tanks and a RBI double by Hall were the big hits to put Miles ahead and give a cushion to Shakayla Terry, who had mostly avoided trouble at that point. Shalayiah Waid added another run for Miles with a RBI in the sixth for a four-run lead.

That looked as if it would be enough but the Thorobreds made it interesting in the bottom of the seventh. Their first three hitters reached against Terry and Nesbitt came on in relief. Two singles and a walk put the tying run at third base with one out before Nesbitt struck out the final two batter to preserve the win and earn her first save.

GAME 3 - Miles 4, Kentucky State 2

McCalebb was back at it offensively, with two hits and two RBI in the first four innings as Miles opened a 4-0 lead. Boudreaux was solid in the circle, working in and out of trouble in the second, third and fifth innings. In the sixth, KSU got two of those runs back with two outs. The Thorobreds put the tying runs on base in the seventh with one out but Boudreaux got the final two outs to earn the complete-game victory.

UP NEXT - The Lady Bears are on the road for a doubleheader on Tuesday at Mississippi College. First pitch is set for 2 p.m.
