Game Recap: Baseball |

Miles earns series win over Tuskegee

After two closely contested games to open the series, Miles won the final game of the three-game set over Tuskegee to take 2-of-3 from their in-state rivals. The Golden Bears came from behind to take the opener 15-14, dropped the second game 12-10, the took the rubber game 17-7 at Roy W. Johnson, Jr. Field. Miles (20-18, 18-9 SIAC) hit nearly .400 as a team during the series and got on base more than half the time. Brandon Leroy broke out of a mini-slump with seven hits and eight runs batted in while Trey Rutledge (6-of-11, 6 RBI, 8 R), Nick Copen (6-of-9, 4 RBI) and Jordan Pearson (6-of-10, 4 RBI, 4 SB) also had strong showings at the plate.

GAME 1 - Miles 15, Tuskegee 14

Miles erased a 7-0 deficit, scoring six times in the ninth inning to earn a walk-off win. Things did not look good for the Golden Bears after giving up two runs in the top of the ninth to fall behind 14-9. Even after Rutledge drove in Pearson with a single in its final at-bat, Miles still trailed by four with two outs before the wild ending ensued.

Max Davenport coaxed a walk to load the bases and everyone moved up 90 feet on a wild pitch that scored Rutledge. Leroy drew his own walk to load the bases again, and he was replaced by pinch runner JaDarius Hartley. Isaiah Jordan would follow with another bases loaded walk that plated Copen and now, the winning run - which became pinch runner Mason McClammy - was standing on first base.

Head coach Milton Barney, Jr. has been aggressive on the base paths all season, which has led to Miles leading Division II in stolen bases. He took his first shot at adding to those numbers when he had Davenport race home on a straight steal as Tuskegee was returning the ball to the pitcher. That cut the deficit to a single run and allowed Hartley and McClammy to each move into scoring position. The next batter, Tyler Spruill, would also walk to load the bases again, which pushed the Golden Tigers to make a pitching change.

Alandas Armistad came in for Tuskegee and Barney tested him right away, sending Hartley on a mad dash to the plate. Hartley slid in just in front of the tag for the second swipe of home in the inning, which tied the score as McClammy and Spruill each moved up a base. With Pearson, who started the inning being hit by a pitch and advancing to second on a balk, at the the plate, Armistad was called for another balk, which scored McClammy and set of a big celebration behind home plate as the Golden Bears finished running down the Golden Tigers.

GAME 2 - Tuskegee 12, Miles 10

The Golden Bears again spotted Tuskegee a big lead but this time, they came up just short of a second big comeback as the Golden Tigers won in Birmingham for the first time in 10 years.

Down 6-0 in the third, Miles started to come back with a two-run single by Rutledge to cut into the deficit. But Evan Jones hit his first home run of the day in the top of the fourth to help Tuskegee keep some distance. Runs batted in by Pearson and Leroy brought Miles to within 7-4 in the fifth, but Jones hit another solo home run to start the sixth inning before adding another RBI with a bases loaded walk as part fof a five-run frame to give the Golden Tigers an eight-run advantage.

But Miles made another big push in the bottom of the inning. A two-run double by Rutledge and a two-run single by Kolby King highlighted a six-run inning but Miles left the tying runs on the bases. Miles would load the bases in the seventh with two outs but Davenpoer hit into a fielder's choice to end the ball game.

GAME 3 - Miles 17, Tuskegee 7 (7)

All the drama that came with both games of the doubleheader on Sunday was gone by the third inning on Monday. Miles put up crooked numbers in each of the first five innings and Judson McKinney (1-2) tossed six solid innings to earn his first win of the season as the Golden Bears won by the 10-run rule.

After Tuskegee took a 1-0 in the opening inning, Miles took control by scoring five times in its first at-bat. Leroy, Davenport, Camden Matthews and Kaleb Priest each drove in runs to give the Golden bears their biggest lead of the series. The Golden Tigers pushed across two runs in the second but Leroy answered with his third home run of the season - a two-run rocket off the scoreboard in left center - to re-establish a four-run cushion.

Miles broke the game open in the third, getting two-run singles from Copen and Spruill for an 11-3 advantage. Tuskegee scored three times in the fourth but the Golden Bears answered with a two-run single from Priest along with a RBI from Rutledge to go up 14-6. The Golden Bears added three more runs in the fifth to close out the scoring and had Matthews come in and pitch a 1-2-3 seventh to close out the series win.

UP NEXT - Miles hits the road to face Auburn Montgomery on Tuesday. First pitch is scheduled for 4 p.m.
