Six Miles pitchers combined to allow just five hits to Montevallo on Wednesday but had tough time controlling the strike zone. The Falcons were issued 12 walks and were hit by four pitches, which sparked just enough offense to get past the Golden Bears 5-1 at Roy W. Johnson, Jr. Field. Miles (12-14) had six hits, received four free passes and were hit by pitches twice but was unable to avert dropping its fourth straight contest.
The Golden Bears had runners in scoring position four different times but could not capitalize. They left the bases loaded twice, squandering two late opportunities to get back into the contest. In the seventh, trailing 5-0,
Tyler Spruill,
Landon Whitehead and
Karun Jackson strung together consecutive singles to load the bases with one out.
Auston Brewer would strike out but
Trey Rutledge worked a walk to plate Spruill to get Miles on the board.
Nick Copen smoked one to third base, but it was caught to end the frame.
In the eighth,
Logan Starnes walked with one out and
Isaiah Jordan reached on an error. Spruill lined out to right but Whitehead coaxed another free pass to load the bags. But Jackson grounded into a fielder's choice at second to snuff out another threat. The Golden Bears left 11 runners on base in the game, with six of them coming in the seventh and eighth.
Montevallo had even more traffic on the bases, stranding 16 runners on base. The Falcons pushed across single runs in the third and fourth innings against Miles starter
Judson McKinney (0-1), who allowed just one hit and struck out three but walked five and hit two batters in 3 2/3 innings. But the game started to slip away in the sixth. The first three batters to reach for Montevallo - on a walk and hit batter by Renay Hunt, plus another walk by Connor Whitfield - all came around to score. The last two were driven in on a double by pinch hitter Landon Leake, which was the only hit of the inning for the Falcons.
Camden Matthews,
Daveyon Lavender, and
Marques Dunn covered the last 3 2/3 innings of relief, allowing just two singles and a walk, but Miles was only able to muster six hits as the team lost for the seventh straight time to the Falcons. The Golden Bears will look to get back on track on Sunday when they host Benedict to open a three-game series. The doubleheader will start at noon.
