Miles sweeps weekly SIAC baseball awards

Miles shortstop Max Davenport and pitcher/first baseman Nick Copen swept the weekly Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference baseball awards, as announced today by the league office. Davenport was named Player of the Week while Copen earned Pitcher of the Week honors based on their performances from last week.

Davenport, a senior from Cincinnati, overcame a rough start to the season to have his best week of the 2024 campaign. He went 8-of-14 with three doubles, a home run, 11 runs batted in and 10 stolen bases.
He started the week with a big performance against Christian Brothers, swatting a 3-run home and driving in four in Miles' 12-9 win over the Buccaneers. He then added a huge day at the plate in the opening game of a three-game set against LeMoyne-Owen. Davenport went 3-for-5 with two doubles, four RBI and five stolen bases in a 13-0 whitewash of the Magicians.

Copen, a junior from Northport, Ala., twirled a gem in the 13-0 win over LeMoyne-Owen. He allowed just four singles, two walks and struck out seven in the complete-game victory. He did not allow a runner to get to third base in tossing his first shutout of the season. He was also 6-of-11 at the plate with six RBI.

Davenport is the third Golden Bear to win Player of the Week, joining Brandon Leroy and Trey Rutledge. Copen is the first pitcher this season to claim the honor for Miles, which is back in action this weekend in a three-game series against Lane. The first game will take place as part of a doubleheader on Saturday beginning at noon.
