Miles used a 6-run sixth inning to come-from-behind in a 12-7 win over Auburn Montgomery Wednesday afternoon in the home opener at Roy W. Johnson, Jr. Field. It was just the second win in program history over AUM (1-3) and gave new head coach Milton Barney, Jr. his first win with the Golden Bears (1-3).
Trailing 6-4 entering the bottom of the sixth, Miles sent 11 batters to the plate to take control.
Jordan Pearson led off with a single and found himself on third with one out after a walk to
Auston Brewer and a wild pitch. After
Mason McClammy walked to load the bases, the Warhawks went to Michael Myers out of the bullpen. That move began a horror show for AUM.
Myers first pitch hit
Trey Rutledge to bring home Pearson. His next pitch was singled to right field by
Kaleb Priest (2-for-5), which brought home Brewer (3 BB, 3R) and McClammy and gave Miles a 7-6 lead. After an intentional walk to
Brandon Leroy reloaded the bases,
Nick Copen waited two pitches before he singled up the middle to bring home Rutledge and Priest. Myers threw just five pitches (plus three more on the intentional walk) but allowed every batter he inherited to score. Each hitter he faced scored as well when Leroy scored on a wild patch from AJ Crocker to give the Golden Bears a 10-6 advantage.
In the seventh, a RBI double by Rutledge and a safety squeeze bunt by Leroy to plate Rutledge closed out the scoring for the Golden Bears. After AUM scored six runs with two outs over the first five innings, Dayveon Lavender (1-1),
Drew Shackleford,
Mason Kirby and
Austin Douglas threw just 51 pitches over the final four innings, allowing just one run and four hits to close the door.
Rutledge (2-for-4, 2B, 3R, 3 RBI, SB) and Copen (2-for-5, 2 RBI) were the hitting stars for Miles, which starts a three-game at Mississippi College with a doubleheader on Friday. First pitch is at 1 p.m.
