After missing 11 games due to injury, Miles guard
Feliah Greer was back in action as the Lady Bears hosted Clark Atlanta in a non-conference tilt on Wednesday night.
The team's second scoring option looked sharp and sparked the Lady Bears, especially in the second half when she scored 17 of her game-high 25 points (along with four rebounds and four assists) as Miles (19-4) held off the Panthers 83-76 at Knox-Windham Gymnasium. The win allowed the Lady Bears to sweep the season series from CAU (13-10) and revive a team that had struggled in recent games to find consistent supplemental scoring.
Miles was a little slow out of the gate and trailed 21-13 at the end of the first quarter. But the Lady Bears started to find the range from outside.
Iemyiah Harris drained two 3-pointers and Kiyara Howard-Garrza added another to give Miles a 26-23 lead with 5:42 left in the first half.
Simone Johnson would later hit from beyond the 3-point arc and Harris would launch another 3-ball, this one falling through the nets as she was fouled. The ensuing free throw completed a four-point play and Miles led 35-29 with just less than three minutes remaining in the quarter.
The Lady Bears led 39-36 at intermission and they came out hot after the break. Greer got a steal and a layup, then added another bucket.
India Brown (eight points, four rebounds in 11 minutes) would later score inside and when she knocked down two free throws after she was fouled, Miles had opened a 47-36 advantage midway through the third quarter. The lead was still at 10 points after Johnson connected on another triple with 1:48 left in the period before CAU began its charge.
A 12-2 run between the third and fourth quarters allowed the Panthers to tie the game at 57 with eight minutes left in the contest. The teams would trade scoring opportunities until Greer scored on the inside and Harris knocked down her fifth 3-pointer of the game to give Miles a 66-61 lead with 4:51 to go. It was still a one-point game with less than two minutes on the clock when Greer connected for three and Johnson (11 points)Â followed with a 3-point play that gave Miles breathing room. Harris and Greer would make all six free throw attempts down the stretch to finish off the Panthers.
Atreonia Garner (19 points, 10 rebounds) and Trinity Jones (19 points) were the top performers for Clark Atlanta. Harris (22 points, six rebounds, four assists, two steals),
Madison Lee (12 points, two rebounds, two assists) and
Tederia Ashley (two points, six rebounds, two assists, three blocks) played big roles in the win for Miles, which hosts Allen on Tuesday for Senior Night. Tip-off is scheduled for 5:30 p.m.
