ALBERTVILLE, Ala. -- Miles showed an early ability this season to bounce back, earning its first win of the season to close out the Charger Chillout on Friday. After dropping a 13-0 decision to Mississippi College, the Lady Bears secured a 4-2 win over Shorter at Sand Mountain Park.
GAME 1 - Mississippi College 13, Miles 0 (5)
The Lady Bears were undone by a 10-run second inning that featured some tough defense and free passes that kept Mississippi College runners on the base paths. Down 1-0 in the top of the second,
Skylar Jones reached on a single and was moved over on a sacrifice bunt. But Jones tried to move up on a ground out by
Dixie McCarn but was thrown out at third to end the threat. From there, the Choctaws took over. Starting pitcher Mikayla Harris (0-1) walked five batters, hit two more, and threw a wild pitch in the frame. McCarn misplayed one ground ball at second, compounded when center fielder
Takyla Smoot fumbled the ball in the outfield. Smoot added another misread on a fly ball that turned into an inside-the-park grand slam.
Miles had just two hits, singles by Jones and
Kiara Cobb, but started to get the team moving after struggling offensively on opening day.
GAME 2 - Miles 4, Shorter 2
Shalayiah Waid sparked the offense with three hits and
Desalynn Nesbitt (1-1) made it stand up in the circle with a complete-game victory. After getting just five hits over the first three games, Miles had eight against Shorter.
The party started in the second inning as Miles grabbed its first lead of the season. With one out,
DeOnia Gibby reached base on an error.
Genia Hall walked and Waid singled to load the bases. Naveah Rader followed with a single to left to put the Lady Bears in front. One out later, Cobb reached on an infield single that scored Hall to give Miles a 2-0 lead.
Shorter scored in the top of the fourth but Miles answered in their half of the frame. Waid tripled to left to lead off the inning. Two outs later, she was still on third but came plateward when Cobb's grounder to third was misplayed, pushing the Lady Bears advantage up to 3-1.
Trouble was brewing in the sixth. The Lady Hawks had already scored one run and had the tying run on base with one out. but Nesbitt induced a double play to get the Lady Bears out of the inning. Miles would get that run back when they came to the plate. With one out, Waid tripled again, this time to center field. After a walk to Harris, freshman
Auriel Moultry got her first career hit - a double to left - that scored Waid to increase the lead back to two runs. In the seventh, Shorter put the tying runs on base with two outs before Nesbitt induced a ground out to end the game.
