GARDENDALE, Ala. -- The Miles softball team took care of business on Tuesday, sweeping a par of contests from Rust in its home opener at Bill Noble Park. The Lady Bears took the first game 13-4 and finished the sweep with a 12-3 victory. Both games ended in five innings and gave Miles (3-3) a three-game win streak. Among the big bats on the day were
DeOnia Gibby,
Jordan Davis, and
Kiara Cobb while Abigail Boudreax and
Shakayla Terry got it done in the circle for the Lady Bears.
GAME 1 - Miles 13, Rust 4 (5)
Miles came out a bit rusty and the Bearcats pounced, grabbing an early 4-0 lead after two innings. But Miles tied the game in the fourth on RBI from Gibby, Boudreaux and
Genia Hall, then exploded for nine runs in the fifth to close out the game. In the final frame, the Lady Bears sent 12 batters to the plate, the final 11 of them all reaching safely. Gibby drove in two runs with her second double of the game to give Miles an 8-4 advantage.
Naveah Rader added a two-run single to up the lead to 10-4. Cobb, who was the first batter to reach base in the inning, added a two-run single for a 12-4 lead and would come around on a single by Davis before the contest was stopped. After a slow start, Terry was dominant in the circle, picking up her first win after allowing six hits and four runs, striking out a career-high 11 batters.
GAME 2 - Miles 12, Rust 3 (5)
Rust, again, took an early lead but Miles wasted little time going in front and ultimately scored in each of its at-bats to win handily. The Bearcats only allowed five hits, but eight errors gave the Lady Bears plenty of extra outs to take advantage.
Down 1-0 in the first,
Indya Johnson reached on an error that scored
Mikayla Williams, then came around on a sacrifice bunt from Davis to put Miles ahead. The Lady Bears scored five times over the next two innings but only one came in on a hit - a RBI single by Gibby. The big inning was the fourth, where Rust gave up five runs. Davis, Hall and
Shalayiah Waid each drove in runs to give Miles a 12-1 lead. That was more than enough support for Boudreax (1-0), who allowed three unearned runs and struck out four in claiming her first victory of the season.
