Miles closed out the home portion of its 2024 season with a Senior Night victory over Stillman in four sets (25-12, 25-20, 22-25, 25-21) on Monday. The win was the first of the season for the Lady Bears at Knox-Windham Gymnasium and avenged a four-set loss to the Lady Tigers back in September.
Aaliyah Sanders, the lone senior in this rebuilding group, had nine digs, three assists, and a service ace in her final home match. She was instrumental in the defensive effort that saw Miles compile 50 digs, five blocks and hold Stillman to a .107 hitting percentage, which is 100 points better than Miles' season average.
Stilman helped Miles early with a bunch of attack errors that helped the Lady Bears open a 10-4 lead in the opening set. But Miles used an 8-1 run later in the set, highlighted by two kills from
Kendall Townsend and two kills and two aces from
Kayla Trawick, for a 21-10 advantage. Back-to-back aces by
Saraih Taylor closed out the opening game.
The Lady Tigers came out quick in the second set, leading 5-1 before the errors came back into play. Seven attack errors and one service error was part of a big run by the Lady Bears, who took a 13-10 lead when
Kayla Hill (14 assists, four dis, four aces) broke off two straight service aces. Trawick and
Zion Williams added two kills but Stillman fought back and knotted the game at 18. But a kill by
Jadyn McGhee (three kills, four digs, three block assists) put Miles back in front and three straight errors from the Lady Tigers finished the set and gave Miles a 2-0 advantage.
The Lady Bears attempted to get the sweep and led by as many as five points in the third set. But with the game tied at 22, Stillman grabbed the final three points to send the match to the culminating fourth set. There, Trawick started the match with two kills and bookend aces by Hill and Sanders pushed Miles to an early 7-1 lead. The Lady Tigers closed to within 8-7 before Miles scored eight consecutive points to jump back in front. Stillman used its own run - helped by Miles' own miscues - to close to within 22-20. The Lady Bears, though, found a way to finish, getting two straight kills from
Kandace Griffin (four kills, three digs, two block assists) to close out the match.
Trawick (11 kills, 11 digs) posted her fifth double-double of the season.
Trinidy Gaines (nine kills) had a good night and Williams (nine kills, .471 hitting percentage, two block assist) was strong at the net. Taylor had a career-high seven aces, six digs and 16 assists for Miles, which travels to play Spring Hill on Thursday. First serve is at 6 p.m.
