Miles falls despite Trotter's monster effort

MONTGOMERY, Ala. -- Corey Trotter did something that had not been accomplished at Miles in almost eight years, but it was not enough to preserve the Golden Bears' win streak.

Despite trailing by as many as 14 points, Miles was unable to get off a potential game-tying shot at the buzzer as it dropped a 60-57 decision to Auburn Montgomery on Tuesday afternoon at the AUM Athletics Complex. Trotter, a redshirt junior, did all he could to keep Miles (4-2) close, finishing with 22 points and 23 rebounds in the losing effort. He tied a career-high in points and sent a new personal mark in single-game rebounds. It was the most rebounds in a game by a Golden Bear since Henrique Cistrunk grabbed 23 boards against Fort Valley State in January 2017. He was such a menace on the glass, he had more defensive rebounds (16) than the rest of his teammates had combined (13).

Two separate cold spells from the floor in the first half put Miles in a big hole. The Golden Bears made two baskets in an 8-minute span and watched AUM (3-3) turn a two-point deficit into a 24-10 advantage with 10:35 to go in the opening period. But Trotter hit three buckets down the stretch to clip the deficit to 35-32 going into the break.

Trotter, who was 10-of-17 from the floor, connected twice more on consecutive possessions, both times giving Miles the lead. The last came with just less than 12 minutes remaining and put the Golden Bears on top 44-43. The Warhawks reopened a six-point advantage but two free throws from Alvin Miles (19 points, game-high five assists) allowed the Golden Bears to reclaim the lead, 55-54, with 3:08 to go. But AUM went back in front on its next possession and  stayed there. Elijah Horton tried to get off a shot at the buzzer but lost the handle as AUM escaped with its second straight win in a series that has seen all three matchups decided by three points or less.

Malachi Rhodes had 17 points and 13 rebounds to pace AUM. Horton added six points, three rebounds, two assists and two blocks off the bench for Miles, which hosts Fort Valley State on Dec. 2. Tip-off is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
