For the first time in school history, Miles has been selected to host a game in the NCAA Division II football tournament.
The Golden Bears (9-2) will host Carson-Newman (9-2)Â in the opening round of the Super Region 2 playoffs on Saturday at Sloan-Alumni Stadium. Miles was ranked No. 4 in the final region rankings, up two spots from last week, after a convincing 53-25 win over Clark Atlanta to win the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference championship on Saturday. It is the school's first SIAC title since 2019, which was the most recent trip to the Division II playoffs for the Golden Bears. It is the third overall trip, which includes a 2012 appearance.
Miles has won nine straight games for the first time in modern history (since 1950) and has tied the school record for victories in a single season (2019). The team boasts one of the top defenses in all of Division II, leading all schools in turnovers forced (33) and turnover margin (plus-21), currently second in interception (23) and sacks (40), tied for fourth in defensive touchdowns (5) and eighth in tackles for loss (89). In the win over Clark Atlanta, the defense forced eight turnovers, had six interceptions and returned a fumble for a touchdown. The Golden Bears also has the nation's leader in interceptions, sophomore
Lashon Young, who picked off his eight pass of the season against the Panthers.
Miles has made significant strides under head coach
Sam Shade, who was 1-9 in his first season in 2022. Since then, the Golden Bears are 16-5 and this season, he was named SIAC Coach of the Year
